Oh hello 👋
It’s me. Emilie! I’m still here! (Ok maybe not the same online but still working away in the real world).

Since November, I’ve been working passionately in my new role as Clinic Director with .massagegroup . Which means I haven’t had the same time for online content here. As I’m getting more comfortable in this role, I wanted to share with you a few lessons I’ve learned in these past few months.

3 things I’ve learned in my new leadership role:

1. Perfect looks different for everyone. Managing a large group of RMTs has shown me that the perfect practice can take many different variations. What makes one RMT thrive is different from the next, but they can all work together, in unison, when given the right environment.
2. You have to own our decisions. In a leadership role, the buck stops with you. When you make a decision, good , meh, or bad (because you will make bad calls!), it has to land on you. When you take accountability you create trust.
3. Things take time. From learning the clinic norms to implementing new initiatives, time is always a factor. Give yourself time to accomplish your goals.

And bonus 4th thing I’ve learnt - I need glasses for long hours on the computer lol 🤓.

Had a little nostalgia this week.

When I first went out on my own, I opened My Little Sunshine Wellness. It was solely a mobile pediatric business (can you say niche!) and it filled me with so much joy. I worked with kids of all ages and stages, including lots of complex care cases.

This week I was reminded of my love for this population.

My most recent article in Massage Therapy Today arrived. I accepted my first new client in eons- a 7 week old baby. And a wonderful colleague asked for my old pediatric massage handouts to share with a family of hers.

When I was being wheeled into the NICU last year to visit my son Gordon, guess whose smiling face was staring back at me from the bulletin board? My own. My little sunshine was giving me a little sunshine during such a tough period of my life.

Although My Little Sunshine is no more, and I’ve grown into a much larger role (and loving it), I will also have space in my heart for pediatric massage.

Businesses change. Careers change. And that’s ok. We still look back fondly at where we’ve been and how it led us to where we are today.

In case you needed some inspiration for your practice resolutions.

✨ Stop looking at insta (except The RMTpreneur of course) when you should be doing those notes
✨ Raise those prices and get paid your full value
✨ Don’t push yourself beyond your means. Stop saying yes to those appointments outside your regular hours.
✨ You know that online course you’ve be meaning to finish? Time to finish it! (A see a few of you on my online course 🙈)
✨ Laundry…. Time to delegate?

When I heard this on Adam Grant’s podcast Re:Thinking on the way into work the other day, I legit pulled over and jotted it down in my notes app.

You know something hits when you have to stop what you’re doing.

I’ve always been praised for my confidence. As if it was the natural thing that I was born with. But that story never sat right with me. There are many times I don’t feel confident. I didn’t feel confident during my first treatment as an RMT, I didn’t feel confident submitting my first article to Massage Therapy Today, I didn’t feel confident posting on social for the first time (still don’t 🙃), and I didn’t feel confident starting this business.

Yet, I still go forward. I still put in the time and effort towards these goals. We build our confidence by doing hard things.

You won’t always wake up one day thinking “ok, I’m ready. Super confident about this!” Don’t let that stop you.

Do the treatment. Write the thing. Post the post. Open the business.

And if you need a pep talk. I’m here ☺️

Feeling honoured and humbled to be awarded RMT of the year from .

This year has been quite the roller coaster. It truly is so meaningful to receive it and motivates me more than ever to keep supporting me peers and pushing our profession forward.

We do important work and I’m proud to be in this industry.

Had a blast at the awards dinner. Great to finally meet people IN THE FLESH. I’ve connected with many of you online, so being in person was a real treat.

RMTs are awesome at getting to the bottom of musculoskeletal pain. Watch out tension headaches and muscle strains. Give us a few sessions and ta-da!

Yet, sometimes our scope as RMTs can feel limiting. Our client presents with something that we can’t “fix”. Then comes the gnawing feeling “am I really doing anything?”

You are. You are holding space for your client.

The important thing to remember is that part of helping our clients FEEL better is just showing up for them. Acknowledging their pain, showing empathy towards them, and restricting judgement gives clients a safe place to come to when they are in pain.

When it comes to pain, especially chronic pain, it can be just a therapeutic for the person to know they are heard, trusted, and safe. Not everyone is searching for the fix, they are just looking for space.

If you’ve ever worked with me or attended one of my seminars, you’ll know that I’m a big believer in values and in actions.

Values are our fuel. They help us get to where we want to go. That is, if we know how to use them properly. Values need actions. When we don’t follow our values with action, they become mere buzz words.

To have a value-driven practice, we have to define our values and then decide what actions within our practice represent this value.

I’ve picked two values that I’ve noticed coming through in the homework from the Business Foundations course, as well as through my coaching. Punctuality (valuing time) and Accountability (valuing responsibility).

I’ve taken these values and given two actions a RMT could do in their practice to be values-driven.
