After 42 years in Toronto it’s time for a change!

Tons of gratitude over the last 17years of being a Strength Coach, TCM practitioner, educator, online influencer and gym owner.

The last few years opening the at the beginning of the pandemic has been the most successful and transformative time I’ve experienced. I will forever hold that experience in my heart. All the amazing clients, workouts and opportunity to support my community has been incredible. 🙏🙏🙏

I’ve feel like I’ve developed this part of myself to my satisfaction and am looking forward to new business endeavours and connections as we move our family out west to Canmore Alberta! 🏔️

Stay tuned as I pivot my online position to include more of my life in how it relates to fitness, longevity and exploring the dream I continue to pursue… now as the Unbound Athlete in the mountains. 💪🏔️

NATURAL ELEMENT

Spent this last week in a tiny house with the family away from the big city.

Regardless of it being a small space there is such a majestic connection to nature.

I’m passionate about my work so I was clear to myself that this was not an escape from work but a recalibration to space and silence.

To me this is an integrate part of life. My NATURAL ELEMENT, where I feel the most in balance and connected to who I am.

Keeping that connection alive is important so I don’t get lost and then have to escape!

What gets you back into your natural element?

How do you (or do you) prioritize that state for yourself?

CONDITIONING AND BATTLE ROPES

Our muscles store a limited amount of energy that rarely gets challenged in today’s society.

No challenge = No growth

The more you put into it the more efficient you become. Cellular health improves, as well as ATP and mitochondria production, insulin sensitivity and cellular detox improves.. to name a few.

Strength is important and it gets applied in conditioning or energy systems work.

Conditioning doesn’t have to be long.

Once you get your system revved it’s all about maximum effort and how long you can produce it.

This was exercise 1 of 4. I repeated the circuit for 5 rounds for time. 25mins.

Good sweat. Felt awesome 🔥👊

▪️Low Back Training▪️⁣

Low back issues are often due to disfunction in the hips and core. ⁣

Strong low backs (erectors) are correlated with explosive speed/sprints and strong vertical jumps as well as guess what? Less low back pain! ⁣

When it comes to training the hips and low back there are 3 loading parameters for the strength curve your want to make sure you’re getting in. ⁣

1️⃣ The “end range” emphasizes the most stretched position of the strength curve like the Goodmorning (in the video)⁣

2️⃣ The “mid range” trains the middle range such as a Romanian Deadlift. ⁣

3️⃣ The “shortened range” or “inner range” trains even higher up the chain closer to the core/glutes with exercises like the 45 degree Back Extension or a Rack Pull. ⁣

Programmed initially on separate days these exercises train the hips and erectors how to be used to their potential. ⁣

▪️Anterior Compression Strength▪️⁣

I’ve lifted heavy weights for years but as far as the upper body is concerned gymnastics work takes the cake. ⁣

My new programming block by is partly focused on upper body calisthenics work. ⁣👌

Making progress week by week with each of 6 workouts is paying off! Such an opportunity to target weak areas and dig deep into my ability. ⁣

Anterior compression strength is such a feat to develop but worth every inch of gains!! ⁣

A lot of this new work I’ve been adapting to some clients’ programming with a ton of success. ⁣😅

▪️Laying Down the Hammer▪️⁣

It’s been a long winter. ⁣

I have so much gratitude for this body and my physicality. It doesn’t come easy, but without a doubt - it’s worth the journey. ⁣

A winter filled with hundreds of heavy squats and intense flexibility work has carried me through this years long winter months. Apparently Toronto holds the North American record for the city in lockdown the longest 🤦‍♂️⁣

It has all helped to remind me of the potential my body has and what I’ve achieved. ⁣

Grateful for pushing so hard to make my own studio a year ago! ⁣

That being said ... nothing is quite as satisfying and laying it all down with a 30lbs hammer on a tractor tire. 👊⁣

▪️The Drive▪️⁣

What’s your drive? ⁣

If you had 3 months to hone in on a goal what would that be?? ⁣

My last 3 month training block was spent focusing on a daily minimum squat as well as intense flexibility work. ⁣

➡️ It was tough but I’m in an entirely different world as a result! ⁣

In my new block I’ve pivoted to focusing on flexibility work and upper body calisthenics... humbling but daily progress!! ⁣
⁣.. Despite all the new gains a workout never really seems completely without a Squat session!! 👌⁣

Still squatting 2x a week but the drive must be spread out to keep some goals in focus! ⁣

▪️STRETCH KICKS▪️⁣

Dynamic Flexibility has been a huge game changer in opening up range of motion within big joints with dense tissue. ⁣

Activating your nervous system within a metabolic capacity can have dramatic results in the range game. ⁣

I’ll use drills like Front Stretch Kicks as a prep before more focused sessions. Be it flexibility work or strength work. ⁣

Velocity and power and key in getting the most out of the movement. Combined with isometric holds these make a killer tool in your tool box. ⁣

Most of the issues I see in squats is in the bottom position. If you’re off in the bottom there’s a good chance your journey on up will be compromised. ⁣

There’s a fear factor. A real test. Also a need to address biomechanics in order to achieve full depth. ⁣

How low CAN you go? ⁣

How low DO you go? ⁣

Full Range = Full Joint Ability = Greatest Transfer to Performance⁣

My TOP 3 Solutions to Achieve and OWN full depth:⁣

1. STRETCH THOSE CALVES (weighted and standing)⁣

2. ELEVATE THE HEELS (shortens the calf muscle making it easier to get deeper)⁣

3. PAUSED SQUATS (min 3sec pause to release the stretch reflex and to just spend some quality time in the hole!)⁣
