We've been a little quiet since our June 6th Black Belt Grading, and for good reason. Sometimes a day means so much that it takes time to properly reflect on it.
As I look back on that day, I am overwhelmed with pride. Not because of the belts that were awarded, but because of the people who earned them.
At Royal Taekwondo, black belts are never given. They are earned through years of hard work, sacrifice, perseverance, setbacks, growth, and an unwavering commitment to becoming better than you were yesterday. Every candidate who stepped onto the floor on June 6th had already proven they possessed the skills required. What they were truly demonstrating was the character, resilience, and spirit worthy of wearing a black belt.
During my speech, I reminded our candidates that earning a black belt is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning. A black belt is not a trophy for participation or a reward for simply showing up. It is a symbol of the responsibility they now carry. They have earned the privilege of wearing it, and now begins the lifelong challenge of proving every day that they deserve it.
This year, we proudly welcomed 10 new 1st Dan Black Belts, and 3 new 2nd Dan Black Belts.
🥋 **Alice** showed incredible determination, resilience, and perseverance throughout her journey to black belt. There were challenges along the way, but she never stopped moving forward. Her commitment to her training and willingness to keep pushing herself were evident every step of the way. On grading day, she rose to the occasion and delivered an outstanding performance that reflected the hard work she had invested over the years. Alice demonstrated exactly what a black belt should represent—strength of character, dedication, and the courage to keep going when things are difficult.
🥋 **Walter** and **Jonathan** reminded us that progress is not measured by speed. Both spent extra time developing the flexibility and technique required for advanced kicks such as the spin hook kick and flying side kick, even delaying colour belt gradings along the way. Rather than looking for shortcuts, they committed themselves to doing things the right way. Their performances were exceptional and a testament to what patience and dedication can achieve.
🥋 **Linus** worked tirelessly to refine the small details that separate a colour belt from a black belt. Those details often require the most discipline because they demand consistency, focus, and accountability. He embraced that challenge and elevated himself to the standard expected of a black belt.
🥋 **Juli** delivered an amazing performance and truly showcased the skills she has worked so hard to develop. Her focus, determination, and work ethic are outstanding, and she sets an incredible example for those around her, especially her younger brother who looks up to her every day.
🥋 **Ava, Lillian, Sophie, and Pavle** all began their journeys in our after-school program. Watching each of you grow over the years has been one of the greatest rewards of being an instructor. I have had the privilege of watching you develop not only into skilled martial artists but into respectful, confident, and remarkable young people. I could not be more proud of how far you have come.
🥋 **Janice** was our only adult candidate and an inspiration to everyone in the room. She balanced work, family, injuries, and training while maintaining an attitude and sense of humour that never wavered. She started this journey alongside her children but discovered her own passion for Taekwondo along the way. Her commitment to her personal growth, while continuing to encourage her daughters in theirs, is truly admirable. She has become a role model not only for her family but for many of the parents who have joined our program because of her example.
2nd Dan Black Belts
Advancing to 2nd Dan is a rare accomplishment. Many students achieve 1st Dan Black Belt. Far fewer continue the journey after the excitement of that achievement fades. A 2nd Dan demonstrates a commitment not just to earning a belt, but to the lifelong pursuit of mastery.
⭐ **Zach** delivered an exceptional performance. Earlier this year he stepped into his first High Performance sparring match at Nationals—a challenge that would intimidate most athletes. The growth, maturity, and learning that have taken place both leading up to and following that experience have been incredible to witness. His future in the sport is extremely bright.
⭐ **Dax** has come an incredibly long way from his beginnings in our after-school program. Now a member of our High Performance Sparring Team, he continues to challenge himself and pursue bigger goals. His dedication has led him to set his sights on competing at the Provincial Games this October, and we are excited to see where his journey takes him next.
⭐ **Duncan** holds a special place in Royal Taekwondo history as one of our first students to progress through the Musketeers Program, earn his black belt, and now achieve 2nd Dan. What stands out most is his dedication after earning 1st Dan. When many people would be satisfied with what they had already accomplished, he continued to train, improve, and challenge himself. That commitment is what makes this achievement so meaningful.
I also want to take a moment to thank all of our parents. Every day, you place your trust in me and our team by allowing us to play a role in your children's lives. That trust is something I never take lightly and never take for granted. Thank you for the early mornings, the late nights, the countless drives to class, the encouragement after difficult training sessions, and for believing in our program. Watching your children grow into confident, respectful, resilient young people is one of the greatest privileges of my life. I will always be grateful for the trust you place in us, and I will continue working every day to earn it.
To all thirteen candidates, know that your instructors, your families, your training partners, and your entire Royal Taekwondo family could not be more proud of you. These belts were not handed to you. They were earned. Every stripe of tape, every sore muscle, every setback, every challenge, and every moment of self-doubt led to this achievement.
June 6th was not the finish line.
It was the first step in the next chapter of your journey.
Congratulations, Black Belts.
