One of our favourite things is helping people heal injuries and avoid surgery. At a minimum Ian goes in to surgery with a less severe problem and faster recovery time - best case surgery is avoided all together!

At 3 Seasons one of the pillars of our philosophy is to take control of your physical environment. At this time of year people are most likely to get sick and take time off of work and to skip the gym because they aren’t feeling well.

We invest in clean air because I don’t want the trainers or myself to get sick and take unplanned time off, I don’t want clients to catch something while at the gym, and we want to set an example to guide clients for how they can make their homes, offices, and kids schools “healthy by default.”

Here is what we do to probably have the cleanest air in Toronto of any gym:

1. We have six medical grade H13 HEPA filters from . When they’re running on their highest setting we get 10-12 air changes per hour. We also have a small HEPA filter in our meeting room.
2. We monitor humidity in the gym and run humidifiers in the winter. Viral transmission is dramatically lower when humidity is 40-60%. When there air is too humid other issues like mould become a problem so we aim to be around 50% humidity. Included are pics showing the improvement in humidity from 37% to 49%.
3. We clean the humidifiers on a regular basis. When was the last time you cleaned your humidifier? If you have never cleaned your humidifier I urge you to take a look. Some humidifiers are so poorly designed it’s almost impossible to clean them thoroughly. If that’s the case throw your out and buy one that’s easier to clean! Dirty humidifiers WILL make you sick and negatively impact your breathing.
4. One thing we can do better at is air circulation. Improved air circulation makes a big difference - our HEPA filters double as fans but a few cheap fans could improve things even more. This is a strategy that has worked really well in schools since it’s easier to improve air circulation with cheap fans than to run HEPA filters (expensive) or humidifiers (you constantly need to add water whereas a fan simply needs to be switched on).

You might be surprised to see our sign talking about skiing and curling In the middle of summer!

However, if you LOVE a winter sport like skiing, curling, ice hockey, etc. NOW is the time for your to prepare your body to get off to a rolling start come winter time.

When you “play yourself into shape” you have decreased performance for a significant portion of the “in season” and your injury risk is dramatically increased.

If you want to raise your game for a winter sport, now is the time to do it. Get your injuries fixed now, deal with your mobility limitations now, strengthen that weak link now, and you’ll feel AMAZING when your season begins.

Our amazing client Beth got her first ever chin up this week! She actually did it on Wednesday but it’s so rare for us to film anything the camera wasn’t out… so we did a re-creation this morning 😀

Beth actually did seven (yes - 7) strict chin ups today. One set of three with 10-15 seconds between reps and one set of four with 10-15 seconds between reps.

Beth does our 3:1 semi-private training and with consistently training for 2x/week for the last 7 months she has improved posture, dramatically improved hip mobility, stronger legs, improved cardio, and of course she has achieved her first chin up!

She is a proud mom of three and it is a lot easier to keep up with your kids when you have a strong, capable, and pain free body.

These pics are all examples of how our default environment often is sub optimal for our health. It’s not just our eyes that can sense light when trying to sleep, but also our skin! This room actually isn’t that bad. There were only four different objects emitting light. Often when I stay in hotels it’s 8-10 objects I need to unplug or find a way to cover the light.

Since taking apart a smoke detector is not advisable I decided the next best thing was a couple layers of painters tape (it doesn’t leave a mark but if you use multiple layers it’s enough to cover the light).

The hotel room I’m in is very nice and clean, but it’s clear to me that whoever designed it doesn’t know much about sleep.

The best hotel I ever stayed at had an alarm clock with a button you could push to turn off the light. So the clock was still on in case you needed the alarm, but it emitted no light! That hotel got it. I wish more hotels understood this - until then you must take control of your physical environment when you travel if you want to get a good nights sleep and be at your best.

I know this may seem like a small or silly thing, but these are the sorts of things you need to do to take control of your health - everywhere around us the default option is usually one that is not good for our health… so it takes an extra effort to shape our environment, instead of having our environment shape us!

Todays video is all about exercises that help with a tight neck. We go over three different planes to stretch your neck in and some tips on how to regress hanging from a bar if you aren’t yet ready to do a full dead hang from a chin up bar. This has worked wonders with our clients and I hope you find it helpful as well!

We recently had to replace the medical grade HEPA filters in a few of our units and thought people might find it interesting to compare the new and old filters side by side.

We now have six Jaspr H13 HEPA filters in our facility and we limit the training floor to six people at a time (either three 1:1 sessions or one 1:1 and one 3:1).

If all our filters run at the top setting the air gets completely filtered as often as is typical in a medical setting (I doubt many medical offices of our size have invested as much in clean air as we have!).

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your immune system and overall health. We want people to feel comfortable getting out of their home and moving their bodies. Our investment in medical grade air filters and limiting how many people can train at once beyond government regulations helps to minimize risk while also supporting the best workout possible (e.g. when we limit numbers there is a greater chance the equipment your trainer wants will actually be available).

This video is a bit different from earlier posts. While we will continue to post educational videos, updates on what our coaches and clients are doing in their own workouts, etc. we also wanted to start sharing about what we believe makes us different from other gyms and personal training studios.

Part of what sets us apart is our philosophy on strength training, nutrition, and wellness, but part of it is also about customer service and actually listening to our clients (both about the little things and the big things).

In this video our owner shares a number of amenities we have at the gym that are a direct result of listening to clients.

Also, something I failed to mention in the video is that a few things like the unscented soap and hair dryer were gifts from our amazing clients 😀
