TILLSONBURG, ONTARIO

SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2025

The elevator doors slid open, revealing the spacious lobby of the Monte Carlo Inn and Suites, where Paul Vasil stood waiting, ready for another road trip, this time bound for Tillsonburg, Ontario.

For nine years now, I have traveled the road from Toronto, to Tillsonburg, and back again. I am always the passenger, along for the ride, with conversation as steady as the traffic, sometimes flowing, sometimes slow, but always moving forward. We made good time getting to Tillsonburg and pulled into one of the many Tim Hortons, because where else would you go first? Of course, who do we see? Andy Horvath.

The first of the two classes scheduled for the day consisted of children, each of varying rank and experience. During the class the underlining theme was to ensure that regardless of the situation their posture remains erect. Stationary, moving, and turning was drilled in various Kihon to challenge their posture.

The second and final class of the day was reserved for adults of varying rank, a marathon session in length. With time on our side, we were able to dive deep into the mechanics and philosophy of gyaku-zuki, dissecting its timing, body alignment, and the subtle nuances that ensure an effective and efficient technique.
