Toronto International Ballet Theatre is holding open auditions for The Nutcracker — and they're happening right here at Stepanova Ballet Academy in Thornhill.

Sunday, June 21, 2026
Two sessions:
→ Ages 8–15: 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM
→ Ages 16–Professional: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Selected dancers receive a contract with a professional company. International and video auditions accepted. Pre-registration recommended — walk-ins welcome.

Audition fee: $30 on location (waived for professional dancers).

The body forgets faster than the mind does.
That's the reason Summer Intensives exist. A dancer who trains through the school year and then disappears for ten weeks does not come back to September where they left off. Technique that took months to settle begins to loosen within weeks.

The SBA Summer Intensive runs July–August 2026 in Thornhill for dancers ages 10–18. Six hours of daily training, Monday to Friday, with Bolshoi-trained faculty, a YAGP gold medallist on staff, and guest masterclasses from working professional dancers.

What the programme covers:
→ Advanced barre and centre work with daily individual corrections
→ Pointe technique — for students cleared by faculty assessment
→ Variations from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and others
→ Character dance, musicality, and performance quality
→ Masterclasses with professional dancers and choreographers

Class size is capped at 25 students. Every dancer gets seen and corrected. That's what the cap is for.

Two-week minimum. Open to dancers from any studio with 2+ years of training — no SBA enrolment required.

There’s a real difference.

At SBA, placement is based on where a student actually is — technically, physically, developmentally. Not the year they were born.

This is how the Vaganova Method was designed. It’s also why our students progress faster and develop stronger technical foundations than age-sorted classes allow.

There’s a question we get from parents more than almost any other:
“My daughter is 8 years old. Is she too old to start? Is she behind?”
The answer depends entirely on where she is — not when she was born.
At SBA, we don’t place students by age. We place them by ability.
That means your child joins a class where every exercise, every correction, and every piece of feedback is calibrated to where they actually are — not where a birthday says they should be.
This is how the Vaganova Method works. It was designed around technical readiness, not age brackets. Each level has defined prerequisites. You meet them, you move forward. You don’t, you stay until you do — because rushing that foundation is how students develop habits that cost years to correct later.
We see this play out constantly:
• A 12-year-old who starts with no experience trains alongside younger students until their technique catches up — then advances faster than their age group because older students absorb instruction more efficiently.
• A 9-year-old with three years of pre-ballet training moves into a class with older students because that’s where the work is challenging enough to keep them developing.
Neither of them belongs in the class their age would assign them to.
