Who's in this 2020 photo taken in the Eco Park's Dark Sky Preserve? Introducing Caroline El Khoury, the newest addition to the astronomy staff at the Eco Park!
"I am a first generation Lebanese Canadian woman who has spent most of her life between two vastly different worlds. Throughout my upbringing, the hard sciences were discouraged for young women and instead we were encouraged to pursue careers that had minimal demand on our time and efforts. Yet the first sentence in Aristotle’s book on Metaphysics kept ringing in my ear: “all men by nature desire to know.” I went on to study philosophy at the University of New Brunswick and graduated in 2014. From philosophy, I developed the foundational skills to take on new ideas, to doubt, to question and turn them inside out. I went back to study Physics and Astronomy at the University of Toronto in 2016 for the purposes of reigniting that desire, to know nature in the most fundamental terms.
Now, I work in astronomical research that focuses on studying fast rotating neutron stars called Pulsars and their behavior in the galaxy. In 2019, I received a research grant to work as an intern at ASTRON in the Netherlands where I got to expand on my research on pulsars – and from there I was inspired not only to continue doing research, but to begin a journey that involves a lot of outreach!
What I enjoy most about scientific research is the opportunity to be able to work with others and evolve as a researcher in the astronomy community. What motivates me the most is being able to communicate all that I’ve learned with the public, be it with those starting out with astronomy, or those with a long-standing interest. For this reason, I have started my own astronomy outreach Instagram page .caro so that I could reach out to as many people as possible and answer all their cool questions, where I share the latest news from the world of astronomy and give my followers an insight into my life as an astronomer.
When I am not busy in the lab, I spend a lot of time outdoors in nature – either backpacking through some of Ontario’s provincial parks or out west mountain hiking. Hiking has given me many opportunities to enjoy dark skies and I’m thrilled to become an astronomer on staff for Manitouin Eco Park and its Dark Sky Preserve!"
