My wife threw me a surprise 39th birthday party.

I ended up in the hospital.

I woke up the next morning with my wife and daughter sitting next to me.

21 years of pro hockey. The drinking was part of the culture — almost a badge of honour. Until the career ended and the structure disappeared.

This is the thing nobody in hockey talks about honestly.

Bobby Orr didn’t have to stop. He didn’t owe me a thing.

Sprinted to the lobby — freaking out — and heard a calm voice behind me.

“Looks like you need a ride.”

I turned around. I swear to god — it was Bobby Orr.
