New class starts in September 2024!
Summerland Aikido would like to invite teens and adult that are interested in training in a martial art to come and try a couple of classes free in September. Aikido involves developing your body awareness through stretching, movement, strength training and balance while learning self-defense moves.

Summerland Aikido will be holding beginner classes for children ages 6 to 12 years old. The classes will start on Tuesday, September 10th, 2023, and will run every Tuesday and Thursday until October 31st, 2024. New students will then join the Children's class from 5pm to 6pm.
Aikido is a Martial Art.
Aikido for children incorporates games and activities to promote coordination, discipline, co-operation, and self confidence. Training in aikido involves developing body awareness through moving, stretching, learning to fall safely, rolling, balance, mental focus, and techniques to defend yourself from physical aggression without being hurt or hurting your attacker.
Children’s classes will train twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00pm to 6:00pm with a cost of $40.00 for one child or $70.00 for two children per month.
Adult and teens aikido classes, for all levels are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:00 pm. Aikido training takes place at the Summerland Community Centre on Brown Street.

Aikido for Adults and Teens
Are you looking for a fun activity for the fall and winter. Aikido for Adults and Teens is starting in September! No matter your physical fitness level aikido exercises and technique will slowly raise your ability to move freely and feel stronger. Aikido is a non-aggressive martial art that incorporates stretching, circular movements, breakfalls, rolling, balance and imbalance techniques to increase your body awareness. Aikido teaches self-defense techniques with respect and disciple incorporated into each class. Through partner practice, Aikido provides a safe environment to learn how to protect yourself when you are put into a non-friendly situation. Whether tripping and falling or when being pushed around, aikido students learn how to peacefully resolve a situation.
New to Aikido students will learn the basics in aikido including, etiquette, responsible practice, Aikido terminology, falling safely, rolling forward and backwards, aikido stance, partner respect, dojo maintenance and body awareness including stretching, muscle toning and balance.
New to Aikido adults and teen student’s introduction classes will run from 6:15pm to 7:00pm for the month of September on Mondays and Thursdays. In November all adults and teen students will then start class at 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Mondays and 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Thursdays.
Classes start on Thursday September 7th at the Summerland Community Centre (downstairs) enter through the parking lot ramp.

1. What do you wear to aikido? Sweatpants and a t-shirt.
2. Do you practice in bare feet? Yes, we train in bare feet, nails clipped short.
3. What ages can train in Aikido? All ages can train in aikido, each student works at their own level of flexibility and strength level!
4. Can we only attend one class a week? Yes, attend when you can. Although classes are progressive, there is always lots of review.
5. What do we do if we are going to miss class? Please email the Sensei as soon as you know you will miss class.
6. Are there classes during holidays? There are usually optional classes on holidays!
7. Is there an insurance fee? Yes, there is an insurance fee for the year. The amount depends on whether you are over 18 years old or under.
8. How much does it cost for aikido? Under 18 years old $40.00 per month over 18 years old $60.00 per month.

Aikido for Kids

Aikido teaches self-defense techniques with a high level of respect and disciple incorporated into each class. Through games and partner practice, Aikido provides a safe environment to learn how to protect yourself when falling or when being pushed around or being bullied. Aikido students learn how to peacefully defuse a potential physical situation.
New to Aikido students will learn the basics in aikido including, etiquette, responsible practice, Aikido terminology, falling safely, rolling forward and backwards, aikido stance, partner respect, dojo maintenance and body awareness including stretching, muscle toning and balance.
The introduction classes will run from 4:30pm to 5:00pm for the months of September and October on Mondays and Thursdays. In November the new students will then enter the class from 5pm to 6pm with the students that have trained in aikido previously.
Classes start on Thursday September 7th at the Summerland Community Centre (downstairs) enter through the parking lot ramp.

Great start to Aikido last night! 42 students training in the 3 classes!

Hi Everyone!
Summerland Aikido have receiving several emails regarding Aikido in the fall. Yes!! Aikido will be continuing in September. September classes will be starting on September 8th at the Summerland Community Centre. Former students can return before September 8th to get a jump on September training!

This year we will be downstairs, so please enter through the entrance in the parking lot. All students returning to aikido, please contact Sensei as soon as possible to make sure your place in the class is reserved. We will be running classes on Mondays and Thursdays, the same as last year.

The Summerland Aikido Club is looking to expand the Adult/Teen class, so if you know of anyone that is looking to train in aikido please have them contact Jim Redding at [email protected].
