Team Hyatt Year in Review ‘25-26
What an incredible season topped with a gold medal!!
We have had a few days to get caught up with school work and let it sink in that we won GOLD at OFSAA!! We thought it would be a good time to update everyone about our season and plans for our next.
After three of us attended Ontario Trillium Curling Camp at the KW Granite Club in August, our season started early with our first Junior Slam Series (JSS) event happening the first weekend of September. We had a couple practices before our next JSS event the first weekend of October. The following weekend we attended a Stu Sells series event where we made the playoffs for the first time, and we even won a bit of money!! We attended one more JSS event at the beginning of November before participating in the U18 provincial qualifier in St Thomas in
December. Unfortunately, at this double knock out event, we couldn’t win our third game and were eliminated.
Next, our focus turned to our high school season with the goal of making it back to OFSAA for the 3rd consecutive year and making the playoffs. As we started our high school season Coach Hyatt suggested that we try switching Hailey back to the lead position and move Brooklyn to vice. After that change the team
excelled and played through the funspiels, Perth and Huron-Perth Championship with a 11-0 record against
high school girls’ teams with one loss against F.E. Madill boys team (if only we could play that game again)
The next goal was to win the WOSSAA banner, we played Catholic Central in the first game winning 13-0. After that we played our toughest game yet against Saunders School from London. We had played them in previous years and this year they were ready for us. We pulled off a 7-6 win in 7 ends after running out of time to play the 8th. These results had us headed to Thunder Bay with a record of 13-0 and a mindset that
our goals were achievable, “we can make the playoffs”!!
We arrived in Thunder Bay a couple days ahead of any scheduled activities so that we had time to be tourists and had a chance to get on the ice at the Port Arthur Curling Club before the event started. Round robin play started on Wednesday morning and we played in 4 straight draws wrapping up our round robin play on Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 record defeating our opponents 42-8 knowing we would be playing in the quarter finals Friday evening. The final round robin games were played Friday morning while we had a chance to rest and prepare for the biggest games of our season and our career!! Once we had made it to this point it was time to adjust our goals for the season. We had made it to the playoffs and now it was time to aim for a medal. With that in mind we went to our Friday evening game hungry for more.
After being down 5-1 after 3 ends we had our work cut out for us but we didn’t give up and continued to play “our” game. A great shot in the 7th gave us a steal of 3 and tied the game at 6. With our goal of a medal in mind we pushed for another steal in the 8th end for the win, and while laying 5 in the rings our opponents
came up short on their draw giving us a steal of 5 and an 11-6 win. This brought us one step closer to our new revised goal and an opportunity to play on Saturday.
Saturday morning we faced Frontenac SS, a team that we had faced in both of our 2 previous OFSAA experiences, both of which we had come up short on. This was a very close game being tied in the 2nd and 6th end and after a measure in the 8th end, we scored 1 by less than a centimetre and won the game 6-4.
Suddenly, it was time to revise our goal for the season one more time!!! We were guaranteed to win a medal but,
“We want to win Gold!” We played another very tight game against ES Catholique Theriault. This game was tied after ends 5 and 7. In the eighth end we had hammer and ESCT was sitting 2 in the 4 foot. After a timeout we had decided on the shot that had to be made and our goal was one shot away. The final shot was a very delicate tap, roll and stick that took the efforts of everyone on the team to make. The rock was thrown, the sweepers judged the weight perfectly and the vice had to line call flawlessly.
We made the shot; WE WON THE GOLD MEDAL!!!
All of this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of so many people and companies that have
helped to give us this opportunity.
