June 17/26: With a Special Weather Statement in effect for our area for this afternoon and this evening, we’ve made the decision that it’s best to cancel t-ball tonight in order to keep everyone safe.

Please note that with the potential for some very nasty weather tonight, Coach Cheryl will be closing her studio for the evening. As such, there will be no alternate “inclement weather” option for our t-ball athletes tonight.

See everyone next week!

UPDATE on our athlete visits to Sobeys and Foodland stores in Stratford today as part of the annual Sobeys (Empire Inc.) fundraising campaign in support of Special Olympics.

Athletes Mike K, Russell and Tiffany will be at Sobeys, and athletes Franny, Jamie, Marcy and Meghan will be at Foodland (Stratford) until 1 pm today.

SOO - Stratford & Area would like to thank Sobeys Stratford store owner Jason Hart and Foodland Stratford owners Cheryl and Don McWilliam for inviting our athletes into their stores today to help promote this year’s Sobeys (Empire Inc.) fundraising campaign for Special Olympics.

We’d also like to thank the participating athletes for taking time out of their weekend to take part in this important annual event, which raises both funds for and awareness of Special Olympics athletes and programs across Canada!

This campaign runs through until June 21/26, so there’s still lots of time to make a donation at check out.

And stay tuned for the final fundraising total when that’s available!

With a number of the athletes who attended last week’s lawn bowling Open House having previous commitments that kept them from attending session two, a small but mighty group of eight returned to the Stratford Lawn Bowling Club today for more instruction and game play.

Under the watchful eyes of a number of Club members, all of the athletes showed steady improvement as the session progressed. And even better, everyone (including the volunteers!) really seemed to enjoy their day!

Assuming that a sufficient number of our Open House attendees wish to register for lawn bowling this summer, we’ll be starting our regular season next Thursday (June 11) at 11:45 am (weather permitting).

Sessions will run weekly on Thursdays (11:45 am - 1:20 pm) until August 20 (weather permitting). Cost per week will be $5 (collected prior to play each week).

SOO - Stratford & Area would like to thank the members of the Stratford Lawn Bowling Club for making our athletes feel so welcome, for giving them the opportunity to try out the game and for providing Open House and regular season volunteers. We really do appreciate it!

Looking forward to watching the athletes improve their skills and spending some fun times “on the greens” this summer!

It was kind of like "Christmas in June" when community volunteer Patty O’Donovan arrived at my door early this afternoon with our brand new community feather flag - all boxed up!

Of course our curiosity got the better of us, so we just had to assemble it so we could get a good look - and of course a picture. The verdict? We think it’s pretty awesome!

It came with both a stand and a ground spike, so we can display it at both indoor and outdoor events.

We’d like to give a huge shout out to Dave Skinner at Stratford Printing & Graphics (B&V Enterprises Inc.) for working with us on this project. We’re beyond pleased with the final result!

Rumour has it that the newest member of our community may make its debut in the next week or two, so be on the lookout for it. It’s hard to miss! 🙂
