Congratulations Camryn Dewar!!

Fulbright Canada has awarded Camryn Dewar who is one of 14 outstanding Canadian students selected for the prestigious and highly competitive 2024-2025 Fulbright Canada Student Award. Camryn Dewar, a trailblazing Indigenous (Métis) soprano from Stony Mountain, Manitoba (Treaty One territory) is gaining international recognition not only for her talent, but also for her dedication to cultural advocacy, amplifying the voices of Indigenous women in opera and creating a lasting impact on the global stage. A graduate of the University of Manitoba's Bachelor of Music program (Vocal Performance with Distinction), Dewar will complete her Master of Music in Opera Performance at Montclair State University under Metropolitan Opera’s Barbara Dever next May.

Through her Fulbright Lecture Recital Series, Harmonizing Truth and Reconciliation: Female Indigenous Representation and Community Engagement in Music, Dewar seeks to use opera as a bridge between cultures, fostering critical dialogue and community healing by highlighting Indigenous stories through the universal power of music. This will culminate in a series of presentations: first at the Montclair Art Museum April 13th, at Montclair State University in late April, and the American Association of University Women May 12th.

As a Red River Métis, Dewar’s journey from a small ski area in rural Manitoba to prestigious stages like Carnegie Hall reflects her passion and resilience. With each performance, Dewar brings the stories of Canadian Indigenous women to life, using opera and art song as a powerful platform for truth and reconciliation.
Dewar's recent performances include roles in Indians on Vacation workshop, Banff Centre, The Grapes of Wrath at Carnegie Hall, Blind Injustice in New Jersey, and Li Keur: Riel's Heart of the North with Manitoba Opera. Upcoming engagements feature the Mother in Hansel and Gretel with Montclair Chamber Ensemble Opera and “Blind Injustice” at Lincoln Center with MasterVoices.
Beyond the Fulbright Scholarship, Dewar has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Association of American University Women Scholarship, Canadian Federation of University Women Scholarship, Modern Métis Woman Scholarship, Les Michif Otipemisiwak Fellowship, and the Association of Opera in Canada Fellowship..
As she prepares to bring Indigenous stories to new stages, Camryn Dewar’s voice, both in music and advocacy, is set to resonate far beyond the opera world, marking her as a true force for change.

Dear Friends of Stony,

Thank you for your support over the years.
You have been a valuable part of our business and lives since 1988. We have loved the journey of seeing you grow, learn and have fun at Stony. We have loved welcoming your children as they continued the love affair with snow.
So, we wanted you to officially know that we are retiring!!!! As you all know we have been closed for the past 2 seasons due to COVID19. As a family we reviewed our operations, logistics and capacity to re-open this winter. As we plan what our next steps are, Camryn is pursuing a career in Opera and is currently taking her Masters in Music (Vocal Performance) at Montclair State university in New Jersey.
Stony Mountain Ski Area will be on the market for the next generation of skiers and snowboarders. This was not an easy decision to make. We know the passion and dedication you have for Stony Mountain Ski Area and the impact Stony has had on our local community. We added 2 runs, a terrain park, upgraded the snowmaking and grooming system, rental shop, lights and lifts.
We are proud of the legacy that our ownership will leave behind. We were the first ski area in Manitoba to embrace the sport of snowboarding in 1988. Snowmaking upgrades allowed us to be one of the first ski areas open for every year we were operational. Our snowschool was comprehensive and offered lessons for all ages and skill levels.
Thousands of people have learned to ski here on the prairies and we know many of our customers have gone on to have careers in the Ski Industry all around the world.
We have loved to have grown up with families for almost 3 generations.
As we plan our next move as a family we will be listing the ski area for sale. We are not selling any equipment at this point as it is part of the package. It is our hope and intention for it to remain a ski area.
We love living in Stony Mountain and both of us are lifelong residents of the Interlake. We hope that Stony’s next phase is to continue being a snow facility.
We are going to miss you and as I write this Gary is going through Snowmaking Withdrawal and watching Warren Miller Movies 😊.
And remember “A bad day skiing or snowboarding beats a good day at work”
Stay well, keep loving fun, adventure and snow,

Heather, Gary & Camryn Dewar
