Day 448:

Today I snuck out into the field with the intention of quietly observing Easy in her natural habitat: enthusiastically mowing down grass.

Unfortunately for me, my cover was blown almost immediately.

The moment she spotted me, she lifted her head and made a beeline in my direction. She was absolutely convinced I had arrived carrying treats and was quite disappointed to discover that I had only brought scratches and affection.

At first she was mildly offended by this betrayal. I could practically see her calculating whether my presence was worth her time without snacks being involved.

Thankfully, she eventually decided that scratches were an acceptable substitute.

So we spent some time just being together. Easy grazed while I wandered alongside her, leaned against her shoulder, scratched her favorite spots, and occasionally wrapped my arms around her neck for a hug. To be fair, the hugs were mostly for me. Easy tolerates them because she is a good sport, not because she shares my enthusiasm for them.

These quiet moments are becoming some of my favorites.

There was no agenda today. No training goals. No lessons to teach. No expectations. Just a horse grazing in the sunshine and a human enjoying her company.

One thing I’ve started to notice is that Easy is slowly maturing. It’s not dramatic and it’s not happening overnight, but it’s there. She still paws when she’s impatient or frustrated, but it’s happening less and less. She’s becoming more willing to pause and think before responding.

Growth rarely happens in giant leaps. Most of the time it’s found in the small moments that are easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. A little less pawing. A little more patience.

Slowly and steadily, she’s growing up.

And while she still has plenty of opinions and enough sass to keep life interesting, I can definitely see the horse she’s becoming.

For now, though, she’s still mostly focused on the important things in life: grass, scratches, and being mildly disappointed when I show up empty-handed.

Cyrus Update! Proud Flesh.

Proud flesh, or exuberant granulation tissue, is an overgrowth of healing tissue that delays wound closure in horses

Lower limbs are most affected due to limited soft tissue, poor blood supply, and frequent movement at wound sites

Inflammation, contamination, and delayed or improper wound care are leading factors in excessive tissue formation

Horses are more prone to proud flesh than ponies because of slower wound contraction and reduced TGF-β signaling

Treatment includes surgical removal, topical corticosteroids, careful bandaging, and infection control

In Loving Memory of CocoPuff

Today we said goodbye to one of the originals.

Six years ago, an itty-bitty chick arrived at the farm alongside two siblings. Those brothers eventually moved on to what we jokingly call “freeze camp,” but CocoPuff stayed and quickly proved she was something special.

From the very beginning, she was different.

While the other chickens were content to be chickens, CocoPuff seemed genuinely interested in people. She was friendly, gentle, and always happy to spend time with us. She didn’t mind being petted, would happily allow herself to be picked up, and would reward anyone who stroked her head or back with her signature soft little coos. She loved sharing lunches and snacks, always waiting politely for her turn. She never demanded attention, but somehow she always earned it.

Over the years, CocoPuff became a fixture of farm life. She wasn’t just another chicken in the flock. She was the chicken. The farm favourite. The one visitors remembered. The one everyone knew by name. I could even tell which eggs were hers.

She survived things that should have claimed her long ago. She made it through the night the coop door blew open during a storm and left the flock battling hypothermia. She outlasted the raccoons that plagued the coop. She survived the ruthless bobcat that stalked the farm. Time and again, CocoPuff proved herself tougher than anyone expected.

But perhaps the happiest chapter of her life came only recently.

CocoPuff had always been prone to going broody, determined that somewhere out there were babies she was meant to raise. This year, we finally granted her wish. For the first time in her life, she was given fertile eggs to hatch.

She took her job seriously.

Patiently and faithfully, she sat on her nest day after day. When hatch day finally arrived, she successfully welcomed 5 of her 7 eggs into the world. The pride and joy she showed was unmistakable. She absolutely adored her babies from the moment they arrived. She was attentive, protective, and completely devoted to them. She became an incredible mother overnight.

She was so happy.

Tragically, today a hawk took CocoPuff from us.

In the end, she died protecting the babies she loved so fiercely.

Her chicks survived because of her sacrifice.

It’s easy for people to say, “She was just a chicken.”

But anyone who knew CocoPuff knows that isn’t true.

She was kind. She was gentle. She was brave. She was resilient. She was a beloved member of our farm family and one of the best chickens we have ever had the privilege of knowing.

The coop feels a little emptier tonight. The farm feels a little quieter. And our hearts are a little heavier.

Thank you, CocoPuff, for six wonderful years, for every coo, every egg, every shared lunch, every laugh, and for the five beautiful babies you left behind.

You were loved beyond measure, and you will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, CocoPuff. ❤️🐔

Mares and Foals on Pasture. I am trying something different with this filming style. Just some candid shots of horses being horses.

Our friend Malin Tegelberg created these absolutely incredible watercolour portraits of the Foal Class of 2026, and I honestly don’t think words can fully capture how much they mean to us.

Foals grow and change so quickly. One day they’re taking their first wobbly steps beside their mothers, and before you know it they’re becoming the horses they’ll be for the rest of their lives. These paintings capture a moment in time that we can never get back—a snapshot of their innocence, their personalities, and the excitement of all the possibilities that lie ahead for them.

What makes these portraits even more meaningful is the care, talent, and attention to detail that Malin poured into every brushstroke. Each foal is instantly recognizable, with their unique expressions and little quirks brought to life on paper. It’s clear these weren’t just paintings; they were created with genuine love and appreciation for the horses.

As breeders, we spend countless hours dreaming about future foals, planning pairings, waiting through pregnancies, and then watching these little lives enter the world. To have the Foal Class of 2026 immortalized in such a beautiful way is something we will treasure for years to come.

Thank you, Malin, for sharing your incredible talent with us and for creating something that we’ll always cherish. These portraits are more than artwork—they’re memories, stories, and a celebration of a very special group of youngsters.

We are beyond grateful. ❤️

🐴 Summer • Fall • Winter Training Openings Available 🐴

We are excited to announce that we will be accepting a limited number of training horses this Summer, Fall, and Winter.

While our priority is always the horses from our breeding program, we are opening a few exclusive training spaces to outside clients. If you've been considering professional training for your horse, now is the time to reach out, as availability is very limited.

✨ Training Services Available:
• Young Horse Development (Weanling – 2 Years Old)
• Pre-Saddle Training (1 – 3 Years Old)
• Starting Under Saddle
• Foundation Training
• Re-Starting & Tune-Ups
• Difficult Horse Training (Groundwork or Under Saddle)

At Meadow Brook Stables, we begin with the belief that there is no such thing as a "bad" horse. Every behavior has a reason, and through the Tru Horsemanship Method, we work to understand the horse's perspective and develop solutions that build confidence, trust, and willingness.

Our training approach focuses on the horse's:
✔️ Mental State
✔️ Physical Development
✔️ Emotional Well-Being

We train at the horse's pace and do not rush them through a program simply to meet a calendar date. Every horse is an individual, and our goal is to create a calm, thinking, confident partner rather than an overwhelmed one.

📸 Owners stay involved every step of the way.

You'll receive:
• Detailed updates
• Weekly photos
• Additional videos highlighting milestones and special training moments

Whether you're looking to start a young horse, restart an older horse, address challenges, or build a stronger foundation, we'd love to discuss your goals and determine if our program is the right fit.

📍 Limited spaces available
