One of the things we have been blessed with as Brick House, are our customers and the opportunity to meet and engage with so many directly creating a personal connection.

Here is a great example of that from Linda G who sent me this email today.

“ I was clearing out some old emails and found this one. A few years ago our local paper in Mississauga Ontario did an article on pickleball. They took a photo of my husband for the piece. He is holding one of your paddles in full view. Thought you might like to see it. He has two of your paddles and uses them a lot.”

Thanks Linda. 😃

Wow, that was a fun morning. Did a demo morning for a local group of ladies. Amazing. So many of the ladies had our paddles. Some paddles were 6 years old. The best part, sort of, was the paddles were all still preforming like new and so many of the comments were, "I still love my paddle".
Those words are what makes our paddles different and our whole business worthwhile.
There were a lot of retro 85s which I have to say is one of our most underrated paddles. This paddle is probably one of our most fun paddles to play and I absolutely have a blast with it every time I play one. Sadly they have fallen out of favor with all the Hybrids carbons and everything else but really a great paddle and a lot of fun to play. We have a few left and they are priced at $129. That is a lot of paddle fun that should last you a lot of years, for not a lot of money.

WHY IPMA MATTERS — FOR PLAYERS AND PADDLE MAKERS
If you’ve seen some of our paddles listed as “IPMA Approved,” here’s what that means—and why it matters to you.

The International Pickleball Manufacturers Association (IPMA) was created to level the playing field for small and independent paddle brands like ours. As the cost of USAPA and UPA certification has skyrocketed, it has become harder and significantly more expensive for passionate builders and innovators to get paddles approved without passing significant costs along to players.

IPMA tests paddles to the same standards as published USAPA standards, but with a more accessible, community-focused approach. That means we as a small manufacturer can focus on quality, not red tape—and you get high-performing paddles built for the game you love, without the inflated price tag.

Whether you play for fun, compete in local tournaments, or just love supporting small businesses, IPMA approval helps ensure the paddle in your hand was built by people who care about fair play both on and off the courts.

Brick House is proud to be part of the movement.
Let’s keep pickleball open, affordable, and awesome—for everyone.

The International Pickleball Manufacturers Association provides a consumer-recognized paddle certification service tailored to independent manufacturers and emerging brands in the recreational pickleball market.

Sorry I love this video. From a personal perspective, I try not to be a Ron and have been really working hard at taking the smash out of my game.

So the other day I was chatting with a friend and talking paddles. It’s funny how 7 years of all consuming making paddles limits your conversational skills.

I knew he was getting overloaded as his eyes glazed over, which is the same look I get when my wife asks, how was your day, and it’s all paddles. Apparently I need a hobby but that’s another post.

Anyway, he suggested I should start a YouTube channel and dissect paddles so folks can see the difference in not just construction but quality. Talk about same factories making paddles for different brands and show folks the difference etc. Apparently there is good money in YouTube videos.

But then I brought up the the fact that we were highly unlikely to obtain corporate sponsorship or free paddles from major brands. Small flaw in the plan. Most reviewers get free paddles.

His response was, yes from the big guys, not the little guys, and perfect, that would validate your reviews.

What about liability?

“what do I do”

Ya, maybe I’ll save that idea for when I stop having fun making paddles.

Though, calling BS, does fit with our founding principles of “Keep It Real”

A ponder for sure. Just a thought and putting it out there, would you subscribe to the channel to validate the quantity of your next paddle?

Going through some old boxes and found an original retro 65. Our very first paddle from 2020. We used to die cut the veneer, print it on an ink jet, and then assemble hoping everything lined up. Crazy.
Pretty cool on how we have progressed over the years and what we're able to make now. I like to think we are headed in the right direction and just keep getting better.

The last few months have been tough slugging for Brick House. Lots of hits to the gut from regulating bodies increasing certification fees, low cost paddles flooding the market, ridiculous sales on paddles, and mounds of scrap as we constantly work to improve our processes and paddles.
Some days I wonder why we don’t just off shore our paddles.

Then I get this email. Thanks Melanie

I want you to know that I talk up Brick House all the time with my pickleball buddies. I bought one of your Special Edition Black Limba paddles last year - and people have really noticed it. And it's a beauty to play with.
Thank you for the quality of your paddles - and their great beauty!
cheers,

It isn’t easy doing something you believe in but building great, unique, quality made in Canada paddles is what we committed to in 2020 and we’re still as dedicated as ever.

Golden rule of Pickleball never underestimate your opponent. Never underestimate a Brick House paddle.
