Congratulations to on qualifying for the 2026 CrossFit Games Semi-Finals 🌏

A familiar face in our Islander community, Matt has put together an incredible season through consistent training and dedication to the sport. Get to know him a little better below ⬇️

Q: What are your goals heading into the Semi-Finals?
A: I’m proud just to have made it to this stage. Injuries kept me out of the open season for years, so my main goal this season was to stay healthy and train consistently from start to finish. Closing in on 35, I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life, and we’ve accomplished that goal. Shoutout to my coach/pal
Everything from here on out is a bonus. That said, when the competition starts, it’s full send. I want to finish the workouts, and perform to the best of my ability… even if I get buried by a few heavy weights. Plus, everyone knows I’ll have a few redo efforts in me that will make for some quality amusement.

Q: What are your favourite hobbies and activities outside of CrossFit?
A: Pickleball is life… and is my current favourite activity. My hobbies outside of sport and fitness would be travelling, trying new foods/restaurants/coffee shops, snowboarding, as well as binging shows.

Q: What’s your go-to meal and favourite snack?
A: Spicy big Marys for life… but my current daily staple would be Turkey Club sando ()

This week, three Islander athletes will take the competition floor for the CrossFit Semi-Finals after an incredible season of hard work & dedication.

🏋🏻‍♀️ Olympic Lifting 🏋🏻‍♂️

Olympic lifting consists of two movements: the Sn**ch and the Clean & Jerk.

👨🏻‍🏫 The Sn**ch
A single, explosive movement where the barbell is lifted from the floor to overhead in one continuous motion. The lifter receives the bar with locked arms in an overhead squat before standing tall to complete the lift.

👩🏻‍🏫 The Clean & Jerk
A two-stage lift that combines strength, speed, and power:

1️⃣ The Clean – lifting the barbell from the floor to the shoulders and receiving it in a front squat before standing up.
2️⃣ The Jerk – driving the barbell from the shoulders to overhead and receiving it in a split or squat position.

These lifts help develop:
✔️ Explosive Power
✔️ Strength
✔️ Speed
✔️ Full-Body Coordination
✔️ Mobility & Stability

Gillian. What. A. Weekend. 🤯🌎

Competing in the 65-69 division, Gill took on the CrossFit Open Semi-Finals, completing 5 workouts in 5 days against some of the fittest women in the world.

And the wildest part?

Gill only tried her FIRST CrossFit class in 2024 🤯

After finishing 41st in both the Open and Quarterfinals, she went to work and finished Semi-Finals ranked:

16th in the WORLD 🌎📈

Some of her highlights from the weekend:

🔥 Workout 1�• First time doing snatches and overhead squats at that weight�• Most rope climbs she’s ever done in a workout

🔥 Workout 4�• PR’d her deadlift THREE times in 3 minutes�• Finished the EMOM with 225lb deadlift�• Then went unbroken on cleans 😳

🔥 Workout 5�• Finished 10th in the WORLD�• Only the second time she’s ever done strict HSPUs in a workout 🤷🏻‍♀️

Huge shoutout to Coach Grace for guiding Gill through every workout and helping her every step of the way!

And thank you to everyone who came out to support all weekend - Islander and the entire Newfoundland CrossFit community are proud 👏🏼

OH and by the way..

Gill is now on route to Ottawa to compete at HYROX Ottawa on Thursday in the Female Doubles division alongside her daughter Carolyn.
