BCB FOUNDATIONS 02: WHAT IS RPE?

RPE is one of the most useful tools in strength training, but only if you understand what the number is actually telling you.

RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion.

In powerlifting, we use it to estimate how difficult a set was based on how many reps you had left in the tank.

An RPE 8 means 2 reps left.
An RPE 9 means 1 rep left.
An RPE 10 means there wasn’t another rep available.

The value of RPE is that it gives us context.

The same weight won’t always feel the same from one session to the next. Sleep, stress, recovery, nutrition, and accumulated fatigue can all influence performance.

That’s where RPE becomes useful.

It helps us ask:

Was the load appropriate for the intended training stimulus? Did the athlete have more available than expected? Should the next set stay the same, move up, or come down?

RPE doesn’t replace structure. Percentages are still are a very important part of programing.

RPE is simply another tool that helps us adjust training while keeping the intent of the program intact.

And like any skill, RPE gets better with over time with practice.

That’s the idea behind BCB Foundations: helping lifters understand not only what they’re doing, but why they’re doing it.

BCB FOUNDATIONS 01: WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE PROGRAM?

A program can look impressive on paper and still be the wrong program for the athlete running it.

More sets. More exercises. Heavier weights. More intensity.

None of those things automatically make training better.

The real job of programming is to create the right training stress, for the right athlete, at the right time, then adjust that stress as the athlete adapts.

That means asking better questions:

Is the training actually moving the athlete toward their goal?
Are they recovering well enough to keep progressing?
Are the exercises solving a problem, or are they there just to add variety?
Does the workload fit their experience, schedule, and capacity?
And when performance changes, does the program have room to change with it?
This is why two lifters with the same goal may need very different programs.

Programming isn’t simply a collection of sets, reps, percentages, and RPEs. Those are tools. The value comes from how and why they’re used.

That’s the idea behind our new BCB Foundations series: breaking down the principles behind strength training and powerlifting so lifters can better understand not only what they’re doing, but why they’re doing it.

If you’re looking for more than a generic template, Bridge City Barbell offers individualized powerlifting coaching and programming built around your goals, training history, competition schedule, recovery, and day-to-day performance.

A special thank you to Russ Agnew for all of his help setting up and running the meet. Having someone experienced there to help keep everything moving made a huge difference.

And a special thank you to Sask Lotteries for the funding support. Those funds were put directly toward our reusable Bridge City Classic meet banner, meet shirts, and a warm-up bar, helping us improve the athlete experience this year while also investing in equipment and resources we can continue using at future events.

And lastly, a huge thank you to Richard and Creative Cinema (Arda) for being there to capture all of the amazing lifts and moments from the day. Having the event documented so well gives our athletes and the community something incredible to look back on.
