I have a love/hate relationship with this challenge for two reasons 👀
But I do want to preface this by saying that what did was absolutely amazing and brilliant! More people using their voices is rarely a bad thing, and this is not a “dis”, it’s more-so an observation.
Here are my two red flags with with the challenge 🚩
1. A lot of entrepreneurs watched Jessie do something absolutely amazing in her brand, and thought to themselves, “wow, if it worked for her, then it could work for me!”. And that might be true.
BUT. Studying human behaviour/science taught me one thing: we are not all wired the same. Some people are not meant to yap everyday. This strategy will quietly drain their energy, force them out of authentic alignment, and reinforce behaviours that are not in integrity with their communication style. At the end of the day, people who are more introverted, require longer processing time, require methodical processes, and/or get easily burnt out creating content every day may end up worse off then when they started. I think it’s important that we all use discernment with the types of marketing strategies we apply, knowing that what works for one person might not work for another.
2. The yapping challenge itself is positioned to have us all showing up authentically and appear to be casually yapping on Instagram. (Love that concept!!) However, there is a little bit of smoke and mirrors going on here in my opinion. While everyone is practising “authentic yapping” - we can’t ignore that casual chats are being laced with strategic hooks and marketing psychology. Is that a bad thing? NO! But I think it’s important to note that even the “super authentic” yaps are still strategically positioned to grow IG accounts, hold attention for longer, and convert people in some way. Stay mindful out there, friends!
Again. This is not me bashing the challenge! I truly believe that learning how to show up on camera is an important skill for growing your brand – AND, after working with thousands of entrepreneurs, I also know that this is not the most aligned way for a lot of you to succeed in the long-run!
