When you look at PILATES as a method instead of a workout, you will get more than just movement; you will build a better body-mind connection.
From Return to Life Contrology, Joseph Pilates. You will find the fundamentals such as:
1. Proper Breathing, We should expand and contract our lungs in a full, complete and similar way to pump the air fully in and out of the body.
2. Centering, the act of drawing our own mental and physical focus during each exercise to the core. These are talking about your 4 layers of abdominal muscles and all the muscles supporting your spine from the tailbones to your neck.
3. Concentration, where we showed that we respect our body and put our focus only on our body while practicing. Bringing our attention fully to the movement of each exercise.
4. Control stops us from rushing, because re-patterning your alignment needs some time, the inhibited muscles need some re-awakening, and need to be convinced again that it is safe to move towards that direction. The Facilitated one needs to learn that it is ok not to always cover for the inhibited one.
5. Flow, the intention is that the energy one exerts during each exercise should connect all body parts smoothly and thereby flow evenly through your body. A reflection of our Fascia which webbing throughout all our body encapsulates muscles, organs and many things that show us everything is connected.
6. Precision, where we put our details to how we align, place and trajectory each moving part of the body.
