π¨π¦ TERRY FOX IS COMING TO CANADA'S NEW $5 BILL π
It's official β one of Canada's most beloved heroes is getting the honour he never sought.
In December 2024, the Canadian government announced that Terry Fox will be featured on the next $5 bank note. He was chosen by an independent Advisory Council from a shortlist of 8 iconic Canadians β selected out of more than 600 public nominations.
Here's why this moment means so much π
In 1980, a 21-year-old from Port Coquitlam, B.C. β who had already lost a leg to cancer β set out to do the impossible: run across Canada, one marathon a day, every single day, on a prosthetic leg.
He called it the Marathon of Hope.
Terry ran 42 kilometres daily for 143 straight days, covering over 5,300 km through six provinces before cancer forced him to stop near Thunder Bay, Ontario. He never got to finish his run. He passed away in 1981 at just 22 years old.
But his mission never stopped.
The annual Terry Fox Run he inspired has since raised over $850 million for cancer research β making it one of the largest single-day fundraising events for cancer research in the world.
Now, decades later, his face will appear on the new $5 note β a fitting tribute, since the government says the goal is simple: to inspire Canadians to keep giving, five dollars at a time, to the cause Terry gave his life to.
The new bill will be polymer, blue, and vertically oriented. No release date has been confirmed yet β it's expected sometime after the new $20 note enters circulation in early 2027.
Terry Fox never asked for recognition. He asked for a dollar from every Canadian. This is Canada's way of saying: we remember, and we're still giving.
