Today, the members of the South River-Machar Fire Department pause to remember and honour the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years later, we will never forget the 2,977 innocent people who lost their lives that day, including the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away.
343 firefighters and paramedics made the ultimate sacrifice.
23 New York City Police Officers gave their lives.
37 Port Authority Police Officers also made the ultimate sacrifice.
These men and women answered the call without knowing what they were facing. They climbed the stairs, entered the buildings, helped others escape, and placed the lives of strangers ahead of their own. Their courage and sacrifice continue to serve as an example to firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and emergency responders around the world.
Today, our thoughts are with the families, friends, coworkers, and fellow first responders who continue to carry the loss of those who never came home. May we never forget their names, their courage, or the empty spaces they left behind.
We also remember and thank the men and women of the Armed Forces who stepped forward in the days, months, and years that followed to defend their countries and work to prevent further attacks. Their service, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting others deserve our deepest respect.
As firefighters, we understand the meaning of answering the call when others need help. On this day, we remember those who answered that call and made the ultimate sacrifice.
We remember.
We honour.
We will never forget.
September 11, 2001 — 25 years later, we still remember.
