Never argue with your teen over text. 📱

Tone gets assumed.
Words get misread.

And that inflammatory text?

You can reread it 10 times and get more upset every time.

The conflict can wait.

Take it to a phone call or talk face-to-face.

Bring the human connection back into the conversation.

I’ve been watching a lot of Intervention lately, and one thing keeps standing out to me:

So much of what we do can be an attempt to escape how we feel.

Drugs and alcohol can be an escape but so can scrolling, food, shopping, working, or binge-watching Intervention (🙋‍♀️). I may need an intervention ….seriously!

The problem isn’t that we sometimes distract ourselves.

It’s when we start believing we can’t handle uncomfortable emotions.

And this matters when we’re raising teenagers.

If we want our teens to learn that they can handle disappointment, anger, anxiety, rejection and sadness, we have to practice it too.

This is exactly what I help parents do as a coach learn how to feel uncomfortable emotions without immediately reacting to them, escaping them, or letting those emotions take over the conversation with their teen.

If you want help learning how to do this, DM me FEELINGS and we can chat about how I can help you. ❤️

Moms of teens: What if your teenager doesn’t need your advice as much as you think they do? 😬

I’ve read self-help books all my life, and I really do think I have SO many brilliant answers for the people I love. 😂

But guess what I learned?

Self-help is best used on… SELF.

When my sons were teens, surprise, surprise… they didn’t always want my brilliant suggestions for how they should handle things.

And as much as I wanted to help, I learned that sometimes the best way I could help them was simply by listening.

If you’re thinking, But listening doesn’t feel like enough…
Think about the last time someone deeply listened to you.

They didn’t interrupt.
They didn’t tell you what THEY would do.
They didn’t turn the conversation around and start talking about themselves.
They just listened.

How did that feel?

Now think about the people in your life who make you feel truly heard.

Those are the people you want to return to again and again.
That’s the kind of relationship we want with our teens.

So the next time your teenager comes to you with a problem, try resisting the urge to fix it.
Listen.
Get curious.
Let them talk.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing you can give your teenager isn’t the perfect advice.

It’s the belief that you trust that they can figure it out. ❤️

Moms of teens: If “just pause before you react” feels impossible, stop trying to pause for now.

Instead, start here:

Notice what happens when you don’t pause.

When your teen says the thing that triggers you and you immediately react outwardly maybe you yell, lecture, get sarcastic, threaten a consequence, or say something you wish you could take back what happens next?

What happens to the conversation?
What happens to your teen?
What happens inside you afterward?

Maybe the argument gets bigger.
Maybe your teen shuts down or walks away.
Maybe you spend the next hour replaying it and wishing you had handled it differently.

You don’t have to be able to change your reaction yet.

Just start noticing it.

Noticing the pattern without immediately trying to fix it is how you begin creating space between the trigger and your reaction.

And eventually, that space is where the pause becomes possible.

What situations with your teen are the hardest for you to pause in?

Save this video for the next time you feel yourself getting triggered.

Flipped your lid? Lost your cool? Flown off the handle?

We all do this as parents and it usually doesn't go well. So why do we do it?

This episode will talk about the very human reasons we do this and what we can do about it. It also explains why our teenagers are more likely to flip their lids as well.

Some light neuroscience in here that can help us understand ourselves so much better. I also give you some guidance on how to catch yourself before you flip your lid. You don't want to miss this episode.

What if I asked you to demonstrate how you brush your teeth? No problem right? You have confidence in this (hopefully)

Now....

What if I asked you to speak in front of 100 people? Would you be confident with this? Maybe or maybe not..... If you have done this many time you may have confidence in this area, but what if you haven't?

You can still be self-confident. You don't have proof that you will be good at it but you can absolutely tell yourself that no matter what happens out there, you will support yourself completely.

Will this take nervousness and anxiety away? Not necessarily.

Will it make it more likely that you will try more things? Absolutely, because you know you won't beat yourself up about it no matter what happens.

This is self-confidence and it can be learned.

Self-confidence is a skill
