A massive train bridge spanning the Shubenacadie River at South Maitland was completed in 1901. Five workers tragically lost their lives during construction. In 1912, a 130-foot swing span replaced part of the bridge. The 1,225-foot bridge was abandoned in 1983, with the last train crossing on June 20, 1983. Demolition commenced in November 1986, and a walkway and lookout were built on a pier in recent years.
The remains of the train bridge can be seen on our 2nd half tour or the full tour.
