Sorry I haven’t posted in a long time, deciding if I should keep this account. I tend to get obsessive with things then the other passions or hobbies suffer for a while. And I have a lot of different interests. Found this book the other day! So excited I have been looking for a good one on invasive species for a while now.

A couple of weeks ago I taught some kids ages 8-11 about wilderness survival and what to do when lost. They learned how to make an evergreen bough bed with no tools, simple but keeps them off the cold ground.

I just had one of the most fun moments in a long time! Mushroom scavenger hunt with my two oldest kids in our yard. Found 35! 35 different species of mushrooms and fungi on our property! I know my plants very well but am just getting started on my Mycology journey. It was a delight to search for them with my kids, they loved the time together and finding new ones. We examined how each one was different and some defining characteristics of mushrooms. I only knew about 4 of the species and will be looking at the others in my books. This autumn I have decided to dive deep into the Fungi world and learn as much as I can. My first step is to open my eyes and see them and see the key features. Then learn to find them in books. People usually assume that I know my fungi since I know plants, but I honestly don’t. So if you are looking for a fun activity, take your family into the woods and meadows and find some mushrooms!

Last week we were hiking through this canyon to meet some people for a photo session, it turned out that their bear spray had ruptured in their backpack and filled a portion of the canyon with the spray. One of them got the spray in his face, and his eyes and throat were burning quite a bit. After flushing with water it was still hurting and he had blurry vision. I knew the medicinal actions of plantain would help cool the area and pull out the toxins so I took him to the closest patch and it helped immediately! It was another testament to the amazing ability of medicinal plants again! On the walk back he took a serious interest in medicinal plants after feeling first hand the benefits they have.

Took a much needed paddle on the lake today with the family. It helped center me and calm me. Kale even got to warm up his fishing skills. What a wonderful weekend.

Preparing to hike the North Coast Trail this year! Things are booked! Hopefully we will be able to do it with all the fires this year. So excited! This is my 21st year backpacking, I love it. I find it a great way to enjoy the trails and get photos.

Last Monday we went for a wonderful walk in the woods. We followed this creek which was cool and refreshing for a change. The kids loved it and were always exploring and learning new things. We saw some devil’s club and SO much queen’s cup with their blue berries. These moments where I can see the kids grow in their interest in nature are truly special. Sophia brought the mushroom pamphlet so we could look for different mushrooms and fungi.

Me helping kids get personal and up close with the world of plants. May, June and July this year are full of plant walks! I’ve been loving it. Plants have so many uses, you’d be surprised how many plants you come across are useful in some way. Here we are discussing Pippisewa or Prince’s Pine.

I am hosting two plant walks in May!

May 8 @ 6pm in the Shuswap (most likely Adams River) and May 29 also @ 6pm in Kamloops.
Please let me know if you or a friend would like to go. Hoping to keep it to a 1-2 hr short walk and discussion of plants in the areas. Discussing uses for survival, edibility and medicinally. Groups will be small so reserve your spot soon. I’ll also bring my books to look at for reference or to add to your Christmas list. As well as some other fun things to look at. This walk is free! I will bring my salves in case someone would like to purchase some. You can comment here or message me directly.

Did you know that you can go to school for adventure? Adventure guiding to be more precise. This was my instructor on our first course: Wilderness Travel. Adventure Tourism is an incredible avenue and diverse. I am definitely more at home on land, in the mountains and woods. This spring I will be offering plant walks, let me know if you might be interested. I’ll be speaking about their traditional uses and names.
