Whether you're a weekend cruiser or a full-time liveaboard, these essential boating rules keep you — and everyone else on the water — safe and respectful:

⚓ 1. Know the Right of Way
Powerboats give way to sailboats (under sail), and everyone yields to vessels restricted in ability to maneuver. When in doubt — slow down and give space.

🚦 2. Follow Navigation Aids
Red, right, returning! Stay between buoys when entering or leaving a harbour. Navigation markers aren’t suggestions — they’re safety tools.

🌊 3. No Wake Zones = No Wake
Reduce speed near docks, anchored boats, swimmers, and marinas. Your wake can cause damage or injury even if you don’t see it.

📡 4. Keep a VHF Radio Onboard

⚠️ Watch the Tides
Sooke Harbour has shallow areas, especially near the sandbars. Always check tide charts before entering or exiting.

🚤 Mind the Speed Limits
No-wake zones protect marine life and docked vessels. Reduce speed when approaching the marina and through the channel.

📍 Enter with Caution
The entrance to the harbour can be narrow and busy during weekends. Keep an eye out for kayakers, paddleboarders, and crab pots.

⚓ Know Your Marks
Use the channel markers to guide your approach. Stay between the red and green buoys when entering from the Strait.
