🧭 Boater Basics: 5 Must-Know Rules Before You Set Sail
Whether you're a weekend cruiser or a full-time liveaboard, these essential boating rules keep you — and everyone else on the water — safe and respectful:
⚓ 1. Know the Right of Way
Powerboats give way to sailboats (under sail), and everyone yields to vessels restricted in ability to maneuver. When in doubt — slow down and give space.
🚦 2. Follow Navigation Aids
Red, right, returning! Stay between buoys when entering or leaving a harbour. Navigation markers aren’t suggestions — they’re safety tools.
🌊 3. No Wake Zones = No Wake
Reduce speed near docks, anchored boats, swimmers, and marinas. Your wake can cause damage or injury even if you don’t see it.
📡 4. Keep a VHF Radio Onboard
Cell phones aren’t always reliable on the water. A VHF radio can save your trip — or your life — in an emergency.
🛟 5. Life Jackets Aren’t Just for Kids
Have one for every person on board — and make sure they fit properly. Bonus points if you're actually wearing them.
🚤 Safe boating is smart boating. Respect the water, your vessel, and others — and you'll enjoy every trip even more.
