Cowichan XL made the long trip up to Campbell River on Thursday, June 19th to play the annual game against their Masters Team.

It ended up being one of the closest and exciting games in recent memory.
Cowichan XL batted first and lost Phil Goddard in the first couple of overs injured when he unfortunately was hit by a return drive on his forearm.
The progress was steady against an accurate attack and a slower outfield. Valuable innings by Steve Mayall, Darren Buhr, Howie Bradley, Rohn Mahen and Aaron O'Shaunessy saw the total to 149-9 off their allotted 40 overs. Great bowling by Gabi and Simon Deller for the home side.

In reply Campbell River were always ahead of the run rate but wickets were falling at a steady rate. After 12 overs they had lost half of their side with only 65 on the board.
Then came a couple of useful partnerships which put the game back in the home sides favour. The most important one was between Adam Panzinger (sp) and Simon Deller.

With 9 wickets down the home side still needed 19 runs. This was down to single figures whan Adam hit a ball to the deep midwicket boundary and one of Cowichan's safest pair of hands but unfortunately the ball went to ground and Campbell river one by 1 wicket.
Cowichan's bowlers all bowled excellently, especially Howie Bradley and Aaron O'Shaunessy and the fielders took some excellent catches

A wonderful day played in the true spirit of cricket

For those wishing to help a fellow cricketer out in a time of need...

Quentin's house has just burned down. We are not sure how he will be managing or what his needs are. Anyone who would like to donate a little so we can help him out in the immediate term can send an e-transfer to CRCC and well make sure he gets a bit of cash for his immediate needs

**** [email protected] *****
( please put Quentin fund in notes )

He’s our oldest non playing member and is always working the score board for both masters and our first team and even travels with us when ever there’s an empty for away games.
He did get out safely

Cowichan XL played an Intra-Squad game on Thursday, 29th May at Shawnigan Lake.
23 players arrived on a beautiful afternoon after a rainy morning.
The teams were picked by captains John Black and Howard Martin (Phil Goddard captained Howards team on the field)

John Black's team batted first with a solid opening stand between Javed Khan and Ross King setting the stage. Good innings throughout the batting line up meant a total of 219-4 was achieved off the allocated 40 overs.

In reply Howards' Cowichan Steers always kept up with the run rate with a good partnership later on from Marc Gaudet and Dillon Carfoot saw the team to the brink of victory. The win was confirmed in the 32nd over with an amazing display of hitting from Sajaad Zain who faced very few deliveries for his unbeaten 27.

Thursday, 8th August 2024 XL Match Report

Cowichan XL made the trip across the Georgia Strait on Thursday to play their good friends the West Vancouver Taveners.
On a very hot and very humid day at Hugo Ray, Cowichan won the toss and elected to bat.
Runs were hard to come by due to; tight bowling, timely wickets and a lush outfield. First change bowler Dion Herft took the first three wickets to fall in the game.
Cowichan came more into the game in the second half of their innings with good partnerships between Phil Goddard and Dave Avren and then Dave Avren and his son Jamie ensuring Cowichan had set their hosts a modest target .
Cowichan finished with 126-6 off 35 overs

West Vancouver also found scoring difficult during their innings until Alex and Dion were together and suddenly they forged ahead of the run rate.
Just when a straight forward victory seemed assured, Cowichan came back strongly with wickets tumbling and catches held.
Dave Avren, Bala and Stuart Munger bowled excellently in the closing stages.

This excellent game went down to the last over with West Vancouver needing 4 runs to win with only two wickets in hand.
On the fifth ball of the last over, home captain Robin Das struck a beautiful shot over midwicket for four meaning the hosts won by two wickets with one ball to spare.

Although defeated Cowichan played with great spirit and never say die attitude.

The final word must be reserved for Marilyn who prepared the most wonderful Caribbean style food between innings and for the West Van boys for their amazing hospitality.

Thank you Dillon for the report

While the League team has been having a break mid-season, the XL team has been busy with matches both at Shawnigan and away. Some of our Junior cricketers have helped to make up numbers for our visiting teams (not sure that will be ok next year as they get stronger and stronger!). But one thing is for sure, everyone has been enjoying their cricket in this wonderful weather, making new friends and enjoying reacquainting with old ones. One month of cricket season left, lets make the most of it, it's a long off season...
