just posted a long term review of the Katana. Check it out on Youtube or in written form on their website!

It's pretty clear from the reviews of the Katana (Loam Wolf, Blister, NSMB, etc.) that the Supre Drive performs exceptionally well. We'd love for bike brands to offer bikes with the Supre Drive so that more riders can benefit from it.

What parts can I run on my Katana? We’ve added a Katana Recommended Equipment section to the Katana product page. The Katana is engineered to be the most high performance, silent, and durable bike on the market. This means the Supre Drive high pivot, larger bearings in the bottom bracket and wide hub spacing. But we understand people have preferences and we want to make set up easy. This is why we will offer a section of XTR chain to make drivetrain setup easy and boost adapter to anyone who wants to carry overt their current wheelset. 🍻

Cassette
The Supre Drive on the Katana is designed around a Shimano 12-speed 10-51t cassette. Any level, from Deore to XTR, will work perfectly.
Other brands of cassette (Gabaruk, E13) may be used, but shift performance may vary.
Chain
We recommend Shimano HG+ 138 link chains to reduce the potential for needing two chains.
Shifter
The Supre drive is designed to work with any Shimano 12-speed trigger shifter.
Headset
The steel Katana front triangle uses a ZS44-EC44 headset.
An aluminum front triangle is in development, and it uses a ZS56-ZS56 headset, which allows for aftermarket angle and reach adjust headsets from Works Components.

The Katana features 157mm rear hub spacing and can use a 27.5 or 29er rear wheel depending on the linkage installed. 157mm “SuperBoost” hubs or legacy 157mm DH hubs are effectively interchangeable. We chose this hub standard because it offers a significant advantage in chainline and drivetrain durability.
But we understand that many people have chosen 148mm “Boost” as their preference. That’s why we offer all Katana buyers the option to include a boost hub adapter.
The boost adapter retains the advantageous chainline of 157 while giving the option to improve the spoke angles on the boost hub with a re-dish.
Most hubs will need the drive side loosened by ½ to 1 turn and the drive side tightened by roughly ¼ turn to re-center the rim. Please use a spoke calculator or talk to your local wheel builder before redishing your wheel.

We want your opinion. Do you prefer a bent or straight top tube… even if you lose stand over clearance on the straight one? Let us know why in the comments!

As the Katana gets closer to production we are excited to announce a few updates. 1. Option for longer 150mm rear travel with a different linkage and longer shock 2. Alloy front triangles for lighter weight and potential for reach adjust headsets, proportional chain-stay length etc. (Katana pre orders will still have the option to have a steel front triangle if they prefer)

The derailleur guard is about as high as a brake rotor and people don’t smack their brake rotor too often, but regardless, we figured it would be fun to impact test the derailleur guard. Most of the swing arm is hollow tubes but this part is solid carbon. With Jacob’s help, intern Aidan designed and built a fixture for holding a swing arm half. We used a scrap swing arm half from our climbing of the carbon learning curve. We might add a stainless steel skid plate to the derailleur guard just for people’s peace of mind, but it was nice to see what the derailleur guard can handle.

We did some skinny impact testing for an upcoming video. Nothing on the Katana was harmed in the making of the video, but I can’t say the same as the other bike with a regular derailleur. We did it for science so that’s ok. 🙂

The Forbidden Druid V2 and the Lal Katana, both 150 in the front, 130 in the rear, and high pivot. Both are playful and responsive because of the shorter travel but able to handle more than you’d expect because they’re high pivot. I got to do a proper test ride of the Druid and it was very interesting. Thanks and .ca for the demo bike.

Carbon parts are made from many two-dimensional pieces of carbon stacked onto a three-dimensional shape. The carbon starts as a flexible, sticky fabric with epoxy pre-impregnated into it, called prepreg, and the epoxy becomes hard after curing in an oven. A tricky part of making carbon bike frames is taking the complex 3D shapes of the frame design and converting them into flat patterns that can be cut out of a sheet of prepreg. So bike frames technically go from being a 3D thing to a 2D thing and then back to a 3D thing. And in case you’re wondering, I didn’t suddenly acquire a South African accent - Alex is talking in the video. He’s the composites wizard at Lal!
