ABOUT
Aikido, literally translated as "The Way of Harmony with Universal Energy", was founded by O-Sensei, Morihei Ue

shiba (1883-1969). It is a Japanese martial art based on the self-discipline of physical, interpersonal, moral, and spiritual levels. The techniques are based on principles of harmony and non-resistance. The aim of Aikido training is the promotion of peace and harmony and development of natural power (Ki) that unifies mind and body. Students learn that force and aggression are counter-productive to achieving harmony. Physically speaking, the techniques of Aikido have their origins in the movements of ken jutsu (Japanese sword arts) and the joint locks and throws of ju-jutsu. Students take turns initiating (uke) and defending (nage). Each student learns both sides of the technique. On a deeper level, Aikido is many things to different people: a form of self-defence, a path to spiritual development, a way to physical and mental fitness, a window to another culture and perspective on life. The Saskatoon Aikido club, or "Saskatoon Aikikai" was founded in 1978. We are located in Room 5 (downstairs) of the Albert Community Centre at 610 Clarence Avenue South (corner of Clarence Ave & 12th St). The club is run as a non-profit volunteer organization. Club dues go toward dojo rental and maintenance. We are an affiliate of the Canadian Aikido Federation. We host seminars each year with high-ranking Aikido instructors. Until his passing on June 2nd, 2011, the seminars were instructed by Kawahara Shihan--one of the top practitioners in the world. You are welcome to come to observe a class. Please arrive before the class begins and introdce yourself to the instructor.
