“Running has carried me through some of life’s toughest days. It connects me with the land and reminds me to be present, grounding me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Huskie Track and Field Cross Country alumna Jaira Cross Child is a proud Niitsitapi Kainai Blackfoot woman and member of the Blood Tribe on Treaty 7 Territory in southern Alberta. Born and raised in Saskatoon, she calls both her reserve and Saskatchewan home.

She is a 5X NAIG (North American Indigenous Games) gold medalist, 5X Academic All-Canadian and a recipient of the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award.

She was also part of two Canada West bronze medal winning Huskie Cross Country teams and a Canada West gold medal winning Huskie Track & Field team.

Hailing from a family of highly accomplished and competitive runners, Jaira says her biggest inspirations are her parents and brothers.

While currently focusing on her Masters in physiotherapy, Jaira continues to make an impact in the community through her work with Classroom Champions and Prairie Run Crew.

She hopes to continue sharing her passion for running, and its impact on her holistic well-being with others, especially Indigenous youth.

“I celebrate Indigenous history and culture throughout all seasons, not only during one month. For me, celebrating Indigenous history is about how I live my life every day; honouring the generations who came before me and helping create a better future for the generations still to come.”

U of S Huskie Women's Soccer alumna Kayla Ahenakew is a proud Nehiyaw Iskewew, entrepreneur, athlete, community leader and advocate for holistic wellness through movement.

Hailing from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, Kayla grew up in North Battleford and later Saskatoon.

In addition to her time with the Huskies, she has competed in the Saskatchewan First Nations Summer and Winter Games, NAIG (North American Indigenous Games), as well as with the MSC Peoria women’s pro-am soccer team.

She is also the founder of Miyo Movement - an Indigenous-owned and operated brand rooted in the healing power of movement and the Plains Cree term miyo pimatisiwin – “living the good life”.

Kayla’s inspiration comes from her grandparents, Indigenous communities, youth and the teaching of wahkohtowin—“all my relations”.

“I want young people to know their dreams are possible. We come from strong, resilient people, and we have the ability to heal, grow, and create new paths for ourselves and future generations.”

“For young girls now to have women players they can look up to – it’s amazing. And that’s the way it should be. Not just every four years when the Olympics are on. They can go to games now. They can get their jerseys. They can watch them.”

When Athletic Wall of Fame inductee Breanne George started playing hockey, she played with the boys.

It wasn’t until high school that she joined a girls’ league, going on to play AAA for the Saskatoon Stars and for Huskie Women’s Hockey.

During her time with she became the program’s all-time leader in points (144) and goals (81), and still holds the best single-season mark in Huskie history, when in 2009-10 she led the conference with 28 goals and 46 points.

She also became the first Huskie Women’s Hockey player to be named the Canada West MVP, was the recipient of the University of Saskatchewan’s Mary Ethel Cartwright Trophy recipient and a First Team All-Canadian (twice).

George is also a three-time Canada West All-Star and Canada West Hall of Fame inductee.

The Huskies were proud to once again attend the Pride flag raising ceremony last Thursday!

Both the Two-Spirit Pride flag and Inclusive Pride flag were raised to celebrate pride, visibility, belonging and community across campus.

These principles are integral to the Huskies - sport is for everyone and we all deserve the freedom to show up fully as we are, on and off on the field of play.

The pack is our power. Unity is our strength.

Happy Pride Month 💚

“My father spent countless hours of his time to ensure my sister and I had even better opportunities than he had, like taking us to piano lessons and signing us up for all kinds of sports he never got to pursue. Most notably, my father has spent a lot of his time supporting my sister and me in our endeavors, as my grandfather did for him.”

Huskie Men’s Track and Field athlete Joshua Tam is proud of his Chinese lineage, tracing back through his father’s side to what is now know as the province of Guangdong in China.

The importance of family is something passed down through generations of Tams, who during periods of time in Canadian history faced many discriminatory laws that prevented Chinese Canadians from bringing family member from overseas.

“Sometimes people could go for long periods without seeing any family and knowing they were okay, so it became very important to see family as often as possible.”

Joshua says his culture, family values and traditions have made him the person he is today, a legacy he hopes to carry forward in making his ancestors proud.

“My heritage and upbringing played a huge part in who I am today. I am so proud to be Vietnamese.”

Huskie Women’s Soccer player Nammi Nguyen’s parents arrived in Canada in 1997.

After obtaining his PhD in electrical engineering, Nammi’s father became a professor at University of Saskatchewan.

Her mother attended the Edwards School of Business and became an accountant.

In between all of this, they started a family and settled in Saskatoon, where Nammi grew up.

Being Vietnamese is a huge source of pride for Nammi and as the first ever player to join the Vietnamese National Team from overseas, she hopes to be a role model for young Vietnamese athletes.

Swipe through to hear directly from Nammi on how her vibrant culture, language and upbringing has made her who she is and head to the link below to read more! 💚
