The grounds are ready, the jumps are set, and we are SO excited to welcome everyone to Turf to Timber at Canoe Creek Equestrian! 🎉

An event like this takes a whole community, and we want to give a HUGE thank you to the incredible businesses and people helping make this weekend possible.

🐴⭐ RIDER SPOTLIGHT | KHLOE & SONNY ⭐🐴

It’s Monday, which means it’s time to shine the spotlight on another one of our Canoe Creek riders! 💚

Meet Khloe, 17, and one of her favourite partners at the barn, Sonny! 🐎

For Khloe, riding is all about continuing to learn and grow. Her favourite thing about riding?

💕 “I get to learn something new every single ride.”

We think that sums up horses pretty perfectly. There’s ALWAYS something new to learn!

A little more about Khloe:

🏇 Favourite thing to do: Jumping!

😂 Funniest horse moment: Trying to get a horse into frame for a photo. Anyone who has tried taking a nice horse picture knows the struggle. 🤣📸

🦄 Her dream horse: A beautiful blue roan gelding, somewhere between 15.3hh and 16hh.

🍎🥕 Sonny’s treat choice: BOTH! Apples and carrots, please.

Turf to Timber prep is officially in full swing!

Before we welcome everyone to Canoe Creek this weekend, we had a very important job to do… test out the fields! 🏇🌿

And really, what better way to make sure everything is ready for our riders than to have a horse and rider give it a proper test run? 😉

We’re checking the grounds, working through the final details and getting everything ready for a fantastic weekend of riding.

🐴💚 **MEET THE TEAM | TOMI HAZLEWOOD** 💚🐴

It’s time to introduce you to another one of the people who helps make Canoe Creek what it is!

Meet **Tomi!** 👋

Tomi has been part of Canoe Creek for **six years**, after coming here looking for somewhere she could work AND spend time with horses. Michelle welcomed her in, and the rest is history! 🐎

These days, you’ll find Tomi behind the scenes **mucking, feeding and helping keep the barn running**, as well as coaching our littlest riders in **Little Boots lessons**. 💕

🐴 **Favourite Canoe Creek horse:** Paddington Bear
According to Tomi, he may *sound* cute, but “he is not to be screwed with.” 🤣

When it comes to performance, most riders focus on what happens in the ring. But high-performance coach John Haime believes that one of the most overlooked influences on a rider’s success is something far more personal: the people they surround themselves with.

“Who you’re around is critical,” Haime said on The Plaidcast. “If you’re around positive people, people who care about you, want to help you, and believe in you, you have a better chance to succeed.”

It’s a powerful reminder that success doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Riders are shaped not only by their habits and mindset, but also by their communities, and that’s especially true for juniors.

As riders move through their teenage years, they’re developing not only their athletic skills but also their values, identities, and emotional resilience. Haime emphasized that during this stage, peers play an outsized role. “If you’re a teenager, your friends are influencing you more than your parents are,” he said. “That’s just the way it is.”

Whether it’s a barnmate who cheers you on or a teammate who constantly criticizes others, those voices become part of a rider’s internal dialogue. “If you’re around people who are tearing others down or chasing superficial goals, that becomes your environment,” Haime added.

Not everyone you ride with or spend time around will lift you up, and that’s okay. Haime’s advice isn’t to avoid every tough interaction, but to be intentional about where you invest your time and energy. “The more you grow as a person, the more you start thinking about who you want to be around,” he said. “That reflection is part of building confidence.”

Klemm echoed this idea with a personal perspective. “The number one thing that changed my life was choosing different people,” she said. “When I was around people who pushed me to be better, everything changed.”
