Very good advice on how to stay safe on the water!

Paddling a kayak or canoe is an amazing way to explore PEI's beautiful coastlines and calm waters! However, even in calm conditions, unexpected things can happen. As part of National Drowning Prevention Week, let's talk about how to stay "Safer Together" when you paddle.

The most crucial safety tip for any paddler is to wear your life jacket!

🛶Wear it, don't just carry it: A life jacket can't save you if it's stored in your boat. Put it on before you launch.

🛶Ensure it fits: Make sure your life jacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is the correct size for you and is properly fastened. It should be snug but comfortable.

🛶Paddle with a buddy: Going out alone can be risky. Always paddle with another person or let someone know your route and expected return time.

🛶Check the weather: Winds and waves can pick up quickly, especially on open water. Check the forecast before heading out.

🛶Understand your limits: Don't go out in conditions beyond your skill level, or if you're feeling tired.

Enjoy the peace of paddling, but always prioritize your safety and the safety of those with you!

Join us Sunday July 20th at Rossiter Park as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of a landmark moment in PEI’s environmental history - the designation of PEI's first green belt, the Morell River Conservation Zone. The green belt protects 60m on each side of the Morell River, preserving the wilderness of the river for present and future generations to enjoy.

There will be cake, hot dogs, limited edition Morell River merch, old news articles, and a tree planting ceremony dedicated to the members of the Morell and Area Land Use Steering Committee.
