🏠 A partnership that helps newcomers feel at home.❤️

When newcomers and refugees arrive in a new community, having the essentials to make a house feel like home can make a meaningful difference.

Through an incredible partnership between the YMCA’s Newcomer & Community Connections team and Landmark Storage, designated storage units are available to safely store gently used furniture and household items until they can be matched with newcomers and refugee families who need them as part of our settlement support.

In this video, we’re taking you inside the storage units with the person at Landmark Storage who helps make this partnership possible, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how community generosity is turned into practical support for newcomers.

Hosted by the YMCA’s Newcomer & Community Connections department, our D&D group brings newcomers together. Whether you're battling monsters, negotiating with a shopkeeper or cheering on your table, every session is an opportunity to build vocabulary, confidence and connections while having fun.

From Receiving Help to Giving Back ❤️

After receiving support when he first arrived, Ahmed found a meaningful way to offer that same support to others through volunteering at the YMCA.

“I decided to start volunteering at the Y because I wanted to offer my help and because I feel like I am a part of the Saint John community.”

For him, volunteering has been about more than giving his time. It has helped him meet new people and build confidence.

“Volunteering helped me feel capable. It teaches me something new every day and I meet new people every day.”, Ahmed says.

Ahmed’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of volunteering: sometimes, someone helps you find your footing, and one day, you have the opportunity to help someone else find theirs.
