Parents want the best for their kids. That's not a flaw, it's love.

But "best" is a tricky word when it comes to post-secondary. Best-ranked doesn't mean best fit. A prestigious program at a school your student doesn't connect with is not a win. A program that leads directly to the career they want absolutely is.

I have so much respect for high school guidance counsellors. They show up every day for students navigating everything from timetable changes to mental health crises. Somewhere in between, they're supposed to help every single student figure out what comes after graduation.
