The 2027 Maclean's university rankings came out this week, and I know some families are already scrolling through them with their Grade 12.

Rankings can be a useful starting point. They shouldn't be the finish line.

A school that's #1 overall may not be #1 for the program your teen actually wants, the way they learn best, or the budget your family is working with.

Here's how I suggest families use them:

• Look at the program first: required courses, class sizes, co-op or placement options.
• Compare the total cost, not just tuition. Residence, meal plans, transit and books add up fast.
• Ask where your student does their best work: big lecture halls, or smaller classes where profs know their name?
• Visit if you can. Fall open houses are a great gut check.

The right school is the one where your student's strengths have room to grow.

Your first-year is coming home this weekend. Somewhere between the turkey and the drive back to campus, you'll ask the question every parent asks: "So… how's your program going?"

And you might get a shrug. A quick "it's good." A change of subject.

Here's what I want you to know: about six weeks into first year is exactly when the doubts start to surface. The program that looked perfect suddenly feels like a bad fit. The lectures aren't what they pictured. They're wondering if they chose wrong, and they're terrified to say it out loud, because they don't want to disappoint you or feel like they've "failed" before they've even begun.

That doubt isn't a crisis. It's information. And it's so much more common than either of you realizes.

If the conversation this weekend leaves you a little worried, or if your student is quietly questioning whether this is the right path, that's okay. Sometimes a neutral person outside the family is exactly who they need to think it through with: no judgment, no pressure, just honest guidance about options, transfers, and what actually fits.

Open house season is almost here.

From late October to mid-November, most Ontario universities and colleges hold their fall preview days. Most ask you to register ahead, and the popular sessions fill up.

The campus visit is often when a decision finally clicks. Grades get a student in the door. Fit is what keeps them there.

If your family is heading to a few open houses this fall, try this:

• Register now, and don't cram three schools into one weekend.
• Sit in on a program talk or sample lecture, not just the main tour.
• Ask a current student what a normal Tuesday looks like.
• Have your teen jot down how they felt on campus before the drive home.
• Compare notes that same night, while it's fresh.

A simple comparison worksheet can turn "they all seemed nice" into a real conversation about what matters.
