Another hike with a history. This is Fort George Canyon. In the 1900s sternwheelers would have to be winched through this section of river. You can still find the steel rods driven in rock to do it.

Finally made it up Shass Mountain. I have tried more than once to get up this mountain over the last couple years but have been thwarted by weather and life. Felt great to finally check it off the list. It’s an involved hike, including a boat ride across the lake to reach the trailhead. Saw lots of bear sign. Shass means grizzly.

Took the opportunity to get a morning ruck in during the rain today. I wanted to see how the pants performed in wet conditions. Wool takes longer to dry than many synthetic fabrics, but one of the reasons it has such a loyal following is that it tends to stay comfortable when damp. Took a less-than-graceful slide down a hill I was climbing. Testing doesn’t always go according to plan but that’s the point.

Here’s a little side-by-side test comparing synthetic fabric to wool. For those who spend a lot of time outdoors, sitting around a campfire is one of the best parts of it. Wool handles sparks exceptionally well. Every fabric has strengths and weaknesses, but this is one in wool’s favour. This is an extreme test, but we’ve all had that one big ember ruin something next to the fire.
