The Michelin Man once looked like this.

These vintage photographs show early costumes of Bibendum, Michelin’s mascot. The character was introduced in 1898, inspired by a stack of tires the Michelin brothers thought resembled a human figure.

In his first advertisement, he raised a glass filled with nails and broken glass, illustrating the claim that Michelin tires could “drink up” road hazards.

His white color also comes from tire history. Early rubber tires were pale, before manufacturers began adding carbon black to improve their strength and durability. Bibendum retained that original color as his appearance evolved.
