For more than 40 years, Jane Perry has been a respected and dedicated figure in Canada’s fi****ms, hunting and archery communities. As co-owner of Perrys’ Great Northern Gun & Bow Shop in Sault Ste. Marie, Jane has built a successful family business while giving countless hours to the industries, organizations and communities she cares deeply about.
Jane’s connection to the outdoors began long before Perrys’ Great Northern Gun & Bow Shop. She started shooting with her father before she had even begun elementary school and grew up at a fishing resort, where she was guiding by the age of 12. Hunting, fishing and the outdoors were simply part of life, and those traditions would continue throughout her life and eventually be passed on to her own children and grandchildren.
The story of Perrys' Great Northern Gun & Bow Shop began with a conversation between Jane and her husband, Reg. Reg had always wanted to own a gun shop, and together they discussed what it would take to get started. They ultimately opened their first shop in the basement of a rented house with $10,000.
Within a year, they had purchased a property on the Trans-Canada Highway in Sault Ste. Marie and opened a storefront. Soon after, Reg accepted a permanent position flying water bombers for the Ontario government in Timmins, leaving Jane to run the day-to-day operation of the business in Sault Ste. Marie.
Jane took on that responsibility and helped build Perrys’ Great Northern Gun & Bow Shop into the well-known business it is today.
Over the years, the business continued to grow. The shop moved to its Great Northern Road and Highway 17 location, eventually outgrew that space, expanded the original building, added a two-storey garage and classroom, and later doubled the size of the storefront. Through every stage of that growth, Jane remained an essential part of the business and its connection to the local hunting, shooting and archery community.
Jane’s contribution extends far beyond the walls of the gun shop.
She became a fi****ms safety instructor and hunter education instructor and has served as a mentor for FSESO. Her commitment to education has also continued within her own family, helping her daughter Lana and son-in-law Jacob become instructors as well.
For decades, Jane has supported organizations representing hunters, shooters, archers and outdoor enthusiasts at both the local and national level. Her involvement has included the Algoma Rod and Gun Club, Michipicoten Rod and Gun Club, Thessalon Area Rod and Gun Club, St. Joseph’s Island Hunters and Anglers, Ducks Unlimited, Sault North Archery, Nottingham North Archery Club, the CSAAA, the NFA and the Sault Chamber of Commerce.
She has contributed through donations, sponsorships, volunteer work, mentorship and a willingness to support the events and organizations that bring people together.
Jane has also made a significant contribution to archery in Ontario. She served as Northwestern Zone Director for Archery Ontario for more than 20 years and spent years coaching and managing archery teams competing at the Ontario Summer Games. She has supported local archery teams, youth shooting events and public archery programs, donated prizes, loaned bows for community events and repeatedly sponsored youth archery teams.
Her commitment to the community has extended well beyond her professional life. Jane has organized the St. Joseph’s Island Hunters and Anglers Annual Gun Show, volunteered annually at Ladies Night at the Range and spent years helping run provincial archery shoots with the Algoma Rod and Gun Club, as well as Triple Crown shoots involving the region’s local archery clubs. She has also volunteered with the St. Joseph’s Island Horticultural Society and the Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild.
Throughout her career, Jane has been a familiar face at major industry events, including SHOT Show, CSAAA events, ATA Archery Trade Shows and Western and Eastern industry shows. Her continued involvement reflects a lifelong commitment to supporting and strengthening Canada’s fi****ms, hunting and outdoor industries.
Shooting and competition have also remained an important part of Jane’s life. She enjoys hunting, competitive bullseye pistol shooting and trap shooting. Each year, she looks forward to competing at the Blackfly Tournament in Wawa with the Perrys’ Gun Shop team. Jane, Reg and their daughter Lana have each won the Leo Lecoursiere Trophy for the highest score in Centerfire Offhand Rifle at 100 yards.
Perhaps most importantly, Jane has built her life and career around family. She and Reg raised their children in the same hunting, fishing and outdoor traditions that shaped her own childhood. Those traditions now continue with another generation, as her grandson Asher joins the family on their annual moose hunts.
After more than four decades in the industry, Jane’s greatest source of pride remains the successful business she built and continues to operate alongside her family.
Her legacy can be seen not only in Perrys’ Great Northern Gun & Bow Shop, but in the instructors she has helped develop, the young archers and shooters she has supported, the clubs and organizations she has strengthened, and the generations of her own family who share her passion for hunting, shooting and the outdoors.
