It's grouse season, and The Sportsmen's Den is here to help! We have a few tips that may make you successful in your harvest this hunting season.
First, remember that grouse are relatively small birds, so you'll want to use a smaller shotgun and lighter shot. They also tend to stick to cover, so be sure to look for them in dense brush or along the edge of woods.
Patience and adventurous spirit are two great grouse hunting companions. stop and start frequently, listen for the sounds of grouse on the ground, small calls or wing beating and slowly move in that direction. keep a sharp eye look all around when you pause. they are usually much closer than you might expect.
When you have a grouse positively identified, be sure of shot direction and if safe to do so, take the shot. most grouse that escape the hunter are due to hesitation. they feel pressure when spotted and will only freeze for a short period before fleeing.
If a bird flushes before you can land a shot, don't be discouraged. the typical flight distance of a first-flush bird is usually no more that 150 yards and lends the opportunity to follow and slowly approach for a second chance.
Choose the right gear.depending on your area, choose the appropriate firearm and ammunition to adhere to the regulations for upland game birds.
Identify before shooting. Grouse are small and may be only partially visible. Be certain of species before shooting to ensure legal hunting practices.
Food and Water sources are important to find when choosing a hunting location. determine the most likely food source and start scouting.
Finally, grouse are fast and elusive, so be patient and take your time when hunting them. If you follow these tips, you're sure to have a successful grouse hunting season! For any more tips, advice and to get geared up with quality equipment, visit The Sportsmen's Den in Red Deer, Alberta.
