Pilates is a system.

When you chop away the parts that are hard to mass-produce into a group class, you lose the integrity of what it is.

Pilates isn’t fast food.

It’s a prix fixe experience.

You don’t order “a #2, hold the onion.”
You commit to the whole method.

That’s what Joseph Pilates designed.

That’s what real Pilates studios protect.

Everything else is noise.

If you're looking for the real work, you're in the right place 🩷

A few weekends ago, on the last nice Saturday of the year, a handful of clients and I spent the afternoon together at a private spa

It was everything we needed before the December rush: warmth, cold plunges, snacks, laughter, stillness, and really lovely conversation💕

There’s something special about gathering women in a quiet space — friendships grow, connections deepen, and everyone leaves feeling a little lighter. 🤍✨

Feeling grateful for this little community… and excited to share something special tomorrow. 👀✨

We're into the swing of January and with a new year comes many inquiries for Pilates. It’s important to know what to look for when choosing a Pilates teacher. Here are some key criteria to consider:

1. They have a comprehensive certification

A comprehensively certified teacher is a Pilates professional and has a wide range of tools to help you experience Pilates in your body. Each apparatus, including mat, is essential to the full Pilates repertoire—using just one is like a painter with only one brush. You can verify your teacher’s certification through the instructor directory on their education provider’s website, such as Balanced Body, Stott, BASI, or Polestar. If you're not sure, ask!

2. Teaching is their career, not their hobby

Pilates as a career is different than teaching a class or two each week; it requires a deep commitment to teaching, continuous learning, and developing a strong understanding of anatomy, movement, and client needs. Unlike a hobby, it involves responsibility for others' health and well-being, ongoing professional development, and the ability to adapt to diverse clients and goals. It’s a dynamic, evolving profession that demands both passion and dedication.

3. Your teacher has a teacher

Teachers aren't equipped to handle every client; we learn from other teachers' experiences. Mentorship offers Pilates teachers invaluable support, enhancing their ability to serve clients effectively. It helps refine technical skills, improve client assessments, and tailor programming to individual needs. Mentors provide guidance for solving challenges such as injuries or special conditions and offer tips for better communication, including clear cueing and building client rapport.

4. They keep learning

In addition to mentorship, Pilates teachers should commit to ongoing education to continuously refine their expertise. While a comprehensive certification provides the foundation of their Pilates training, further education ensures they stay updated on best practices, innovative techniques, and advancements in movement science. This commitment not only enhances their teaching skills but also allows them to deliver safer, more effective, and engaging sessions for their clients. Continuing education is a valuable investment that dedicated career Pilates teachers willingly make, demonstrating their commitment to professional growth, ensuring they stay current with movement science and industry standards.

5. They do the work themselves

A personal practice is essential for Pilates teachers because it deepens their understanding of the method, improves their ability to teach effectively, and ensures they embody the principles they share with clients. While teachers don’t need to perform every exercise flawlessly, they should understand the mechanics, purpose, and modifications of each movement. Teaching is not about personal physical mastery but about guiding clients safely and effectively toward their goals. Adaptations are key, and a teacher's ability to communicate and demonstrate with clarity matters more than perfect ex*****on.

Bonus! 6. They make it fun!

Pilates can sometimes feel serious or even intimidating, but it’s actually a lot of fun! The right teacher can turn even the most challenging parts into an enjoyable experience. A teacher who brings energy, enthusiasm, and joy to their sessions is the secret ingredient to making workouts both effective and enjoyable. With the right guidance, Pilates becomes more than just exercise—it’s something you’ll look forward to every time.

Hi, I’m Misia (sounds like mee-sha) your local Pilates teacher! With so many new faces around here I thought I should introduce myself 👋

I’m 37, have a lot of plants and am passionate about animal rescue 🐈 🐕

I love Pilates and became a teacher so I could help clients feel the joy of building strength and moving with intention. I have 20 years of Pilates experience in my own body and five years of helping clients find movement.

I love working with women, both moms and other business owners, who make themselves a priority by showing up one to two times a week at my studio here in Quispamsis or online. For those 50 minutes, it is all about them and working on their goals of building full body strength, increasing flexibility and range of motion while decreasing pain.

It's exciting to offer a new service to the Saint John/KV area, most of my clients have always wanted to try Pilates but there just wasn’t a studio here. I moved to KV in 2022, my husband is from New Brunswick but I grew up in Ontario. I couldn’t be happier with our decision to move to Quispamsis, it’s a beautiful town with the friendliest people.

I’d love to know who is on the other side of the screen so introduce yourself in the comments so I can get to know more about you!

I ask a lot of questions, it's part of how I guide you in your Pilates practice. If I assume you're feeling it in the 'right' place or that you're not feeling discomfort I'm making an ass of mostly me and I'm not about that life.

Verbal cues and questions help you to connect with what you're feeling, encourage you to find your limits and treat yourself with kindness.

The one question that didn't make this list that you'll hear often is "Can you bring your shoulders away from your ears?" but we'll talk about that another day.

If you'd like to learn more about Pilates comment "💪🏽" below!

A few things to note before booking your first session!

✨ Pilates is different than other styles of movement, my goal is to prepare you by teaching you the basics first.

✨ I want to get to know you better! The more I know about your health, how you spend your time, and what you'd like to do in your life the better I can tailor your sessions to meet these goals.

✨ It's going to take more than one or two sessions to really start to understand the benefits of Pilates. My hope is that you enjoy it right away but know it often takes multiple sessions to start to feel the difference in your body.

Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions about getting started!
