Latest update from the Trelinski on the River!

We didn't hear from Blair on the 23rd and that's probably due to troubles with line of sight to the sky where she was staying. Nonetheless we have a couple of updates for those who are eagerly following her expedition.

Ju24.1:a warm calm day made for easy paddlng. Goodbye to the river and hello Setting Lake. Hope for calm again tmr.

Ju25.1:Very windy. Very few KMs made. This is not a campsite but it is where I'm camping. Hope for better weather tmr.

Blair has only a few more days on the water before I pick her up at Paint Lake. If you'd like to share anything with her let me know and I'll pass it on!!

Another update: Blair must have collected some good karma from those long big lake paddles because the last few days have been gorgeous for her. I'll let her own words tell the tale but it sounds like things are going amazingly.

Message: Ju19.1: this site is too beautiful to not take a rest at. Now that I'm 3 portages removed from the fishing boats it's clean & natural too.///
Message: Ju19.2: if the next sites are just as gorgeous I might just spend more days on the river and not worry about making it all the way to Paint Lake.

Ju20.1: 20km seemed to go faster than I remember. Followed a goose for 15km or so who left me white feathers when she'd take off. I collected.

Message: Ju21.1:beautiful site. Stayed to play in the R2. Flipped, filled-up, got wet, had fun. Beautiful & pristine. Quiet but for the rapid's roar!.

Message: Ju22.1:this is probably one of the most beautiful sites I've ever been to. Oh Grass River you keep calling me to stay put & bask in your beauty.

Have a question for Blair? Let me know and I'll pass it on!

Another update from the Grass River!

Message: Ju17.1: Don't know why I decided to tackle 45km today, but caught up on 2 wind days! Last portage non-existent, hope not standard for rest of the river.

Message: Ju18.1: today's portages much better, some treed but still passable. ID'd water hemlock. Enjoying excellent campsite.

We have an update! Poor Blair has been wind-bound on Reed lake for over 2 days! For those who don't know, "wind-bound" means that the wind is so high that it's unsafe to travel. Large lakes are especially prone to high winds and Reed Lake certainly met that standard. Even when she was waking up at 0300 and 0500 the signs were not in her favor.

However! We just got this message!

"Ju16.1:I chanced an afternoon paddle when the wind calmed. She still had some fight in her. After 2.5 days of crashing waves the quiet is eerie."

She made it! She's now on the other side of the lake and the next several days should be much more manageable as she will be on a river and typically shouldn't have to worry as much about wind. Hopefully the next several days will be a welcome reprieve before she reaches her next big lake Setting Lake. A whopping 30km from where she is starting it's long and narrow but the shoreline might offer some protection. We'll have to wait and see!

Update on Blair's travels! She's made it across her first big lake in spite of some heavy winds during the day. A few rapids and a 1 km portage later and she's finally made it past her half way point and picked up her supply drop! As a gift to herself Blair packed a bag of salt and vinegar chips along with a few other goodies to satisfy for that midway point. Tomorrow, she gets to visit a ghost town! Click the link below and you'll be able to see the messages she sends out each day! Just open the google map and click on the individual campsites.

Blair has so far had a complicated relationship with the weather so far. Winds, rain, temperature, it's all a part of the experience but it's slowed down her progress. Yesterday was a day of recovery though and all seems well. The fire that was originally out of control is now under control and poses no threat to her. See below for the map to follow her along and here are some of her updates!

Ju4.1: re fire noted (823'580) Strong wind inface. 2hours for 5km, made camp on small island. Lots of hot liquids to stay warm. i lied to myself that it was a smart idea to paddle today. Staight into a head wind. Rain whipping my face. made 5km b4 giving in.

Ju5.1:made better progress today. Grass river is wide & winding thru the reeds, and deep enughfor motor boats to pass on our way to Elbow L.

Blair was asked "What do you do to keep company on long days?" Sofia Salsi and we will await her reply.

There is a small fire spotted on July 2nd along Blair's route on Iskwasum Lake which she is scheduled to pass through on July 6th. We're keeping her informed with our daily updates and her trajectory takes her along the opposite coast of the lake. We're not currently worried and we will keep you informed of any changes.
