When life gets difficult, we can feel completely alone.
As women, we move through so many reckonings…grief, heartbreak, trauma, loss, illness, endings, and the strange thresholds when a life we once knew no longer fits.
These seasons mirror late autumn, when the light grows thin, the landscape becomes skeletal, and so much is stripped away.
And yet, what can feel painfully individual is also ancient.
In one of the oldest surviving myths from ancient Sumer, the goddess Inanna leaves the world she knows and descends into the underworld.
I know we all see ourselves in her.
At each of seven gates, she is asked to surrender something.
Gate by gate, she is stripped of what adorned her, identified her, and protected her, until she arrives with nothing left to hide behind.
She goes all the way down.
Her descent gives us a trusted map for the places in our own lives where identity falls away, certainty disappears, and we are asked to meet ourselves without all that once adorned, comforted, or protected us.
The underworld is something that happens to us many times.
And as women, we intimately know this terrain.
You may have traveled all the way to the bones of things again and again.
You may have lost people. Relationships. Identities. Dreams. Bodies. Certainty. Old versions of yourself.
You may even be standing inside one of those thresholds now…the strange middle place where something has ended, but you cannot yet see what will take its place.
And somehow, from the darkest soil of these experiences, we can return carrying something we could not have gathered anywhere else.
And this particular space can be magical.
This is where we will meet.
3 evenings in November. The month of night. Writing and movement are absolute magic together.
