A hardcore gym bro approached her, and his words brought her to tears
In August 2023, Steph was still showing up at her Jacksonville gym, even as hurtful comments made it harder to feel comfortable there. She had been working out for more than two years, but medical issues and medication made her progress difficult, and she struggled with insecurities about being a larger woman.
A few weeks earlier, two younger men had insulted her as she left the gym, with one reportedly coughing the word “ogre.” So when a heavily tattooed, tough-looking gym-goer approached her, Steph expected another unpleasant encounter.
Instead, he told her, “I’ve seen you in here every week, almost every day. I’ve seen you in here every week—and I’m proud of you.”
The unexpected recognition moved Steph to tears. In a video shared after the encounter, she explained why the words mattered: “You have no idea how much people who are going through something appreciate the kindness.” She added that he did not know what she was facing, yet he had changed her day.
