MmmmHm. ❤️
I don’t believe in artist blocks.
I do believe that we can stick in inertia and resistance. We can have trauma around the creative process, or can be bored of our routine work. We can put ourselves under tremendous pressure to be productive, or can be incapacitated by demanding more from our art than we have time, energy, or skill for.
Creativity is not a well that can run dry, but it can be muddied by expectations, habits, perfectionism, and fear.
If you feel this sticky stasis and your creative flow seems stifled or silenced, it may be time to take a risk. This is a time to be brave, to take a leap of faith, to try something new and make a glorious mess! It’s ok to be afraid, but do not let that fear paralyze you into inaction.
Grab some cardboard and scribble on it with a piece of charcoal or a chunk of red beet. Do something unexpected and playful! Go to the beach and draw in the sand, knowing that the tide, wind, and footsteps will soon sweep it clear again. Do something silly, messy, different; something that gets your whole body involved, limbs and spine and breath, so you can get out of your head and into the act of creating for the sake of creating.
Whatever you do, don’t try to make something precious. It does not need to be beautiful, important, or marketable. It does not need to preserved behind glass and hang on your wall or in a museum. Better yet, don’t even have your phone with you to document the even and share on social media. Do it for you! Dance intimately with the muse. Become a child again, uninhibited by the pressures of society and the weighty ideas of “time is money” and “good vs bad art.” Be innocent in your creative exploration, even just for a few moments. Let the play be your prayer.
When you arrive back to the studio after, short of breath with colours under your fingernails, sand between your toes, and adventure in your eyes; you will have gained fresh perspective. I promise that the “block” which appeared so monumental and paralyzing before is now less than a pebble. You’ve chosen an unexpected path and taken a detour around the mountain, and surely found new treasures along the way.
With love,
💗 Autumn Skye
