Thinking about getting into cruising on sailboats but not sure where to start? It can feel overwhelming, but there are plenty of easy ways in:
• Watch YouTube videos to learn the basics of cruising and life on the water
• Spend time at a marina or dock, talk to people and ask questions
• Ask around to see if anyone needs crew, a great way to gain real experience
• Join a local sailing club to get out regularly with experienced skippers
• Take a cruising course if you want a structured introduction
• Read books to build your knowledge and confidence
If your goal is multi-day trips and anchoring out, you will typically need certification or access to a boat.
There is no single path into cruising. Some people buy a boat and learn along the way, but it is important to be realistic, costs like moorage, insurance, and maintenance can add up quickly.
For many, the most accessible and affordable path is joining a club and building experience over time.
The Keelboat Club currently has openings for membership at $150 per year, a great way to get on the water, meet others, and start building your cruising skills.
If you enjoy the outdoors and being on the water, cruising might be a great fit for you too.
