Thinking about getting into cruising on sailboats but not sure where to start? It can feel overwhelming, but there are plenty of easy ways in:

• Watch YouTube videos to learn the basics of cruising and life on the water
• Spend time at a marina or dock, talk to people and ask questions
• Ask around to see if anyone needs crew, a great way to gain real experience
• Join a local sailing club to get out regularly with experienced skippers
• Take a cruising course if you want a structured introduction
• Read books to build your knowledge and confidence

If your goal is multi-day trips and anchoring out, you will typically need certification or access to a boat.

There is no single path into cruising. Some people buy a boat and learn along the way, but it is important to be realistic, costs like moorage, insurance, and maintenance can add up quickly.

For many, the most accessible and affordable path is joining a club and building experience over time.

The Keelboat Club currently has openings for membership at $150 per year, a great way to get on the water, meet others, and start building your cruising skills.

If you enjoy the outdoors and being on the water, cruising might be a great fit for you too.

Join us at the Rocky Point Sailing Association for our next club meeting March 10 featuring Miranda MacGillivray, a UBC Master’s student researching coastal eelgrass ecosystems and marine biodiversity.

Miranda will share insights from her work studying eelgrass meadows in Desolation Sound Marine Park, including how boating and anchoring can affect these important habitats and what sailors can do to help protect them. Eelgrass plays a critical role in supporting fish habitat, biodiversity, and coastal resilience, making this a fascinating topic for anyone who enjoys being on the water.

It’s also a great opportunity to meet local sailors, learn more about our community sailing club, and connect with others who enjoy spending time on the water.

📍 2715 Esplanade Avenue, 2nd Floor
🕒 6:30–8:00 PM, March 10
💲 Free to attend — everyone is welcome
