I’m so proud of Prime Minister Carney and the Premiers who are supporting him. A leader who actually leads and tells the unvarnished truth.
What stood out to me most wasn't the measured tone, the factual data, or even the excellent points.
It was the honesty.
I've watched our prime minister's press conference several times now for research purposes, and the biggest thing I took away from it was simple: he told us the truth.
He didn't sugarcoat the escalation that will undoubtedly follow. He didn't pretend there would be no consequences, and he didn't try to make a difficult situation sound easier than it is.
Even more striking was his frankness about our own retaliation. The prime minister plainly acknowledged that dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs could raise costs for Canadians and reduce consumer choice while they're in place.
Let's be honest for a minute: governments rarely make admissions like that publicly. It would have been far more politically convenient to tell Canadians that the punishment would somehow run in only one direction, as another leader has done.
Instead, he levelled with us.
And if you listened carefully, the message was clear: we're entering this with our eyes wide open. We know there will be costs. We know there will be challenges. But we're being told the truth about them rather than being sold a comforting story.
That matters.
Because in moments like this, Canadians don't need politicians to tell us everything will be fine.
We need leaders who will tell us what we're up against, acknowledge the sacrifices that may be required, and trust us enough to handle the truth.
And that means something to me.
