After 30 years providing superior service in the SCUBA industry, Doug and Judy are retiring. The Port Elgin storefront will be closing early summer 2021. We are sad to say farewell to all our loyal customers and divers as we look forward to this next stage in our lives.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Spruce Robertson passed away on Monday September 23. Spruce was a huge part of the Groundhog family, especially in our early years. She gleefully introduced herself to new students and staff as the "Divemaster from Hell" as she worked alongside the Instructors at our training dives. NOONE dared to either enter the water or exit the water without checking-in with Spruce. Her infectious smile was always present where ever she was. MEMORY LANE: Having never been on a sail boat in her life, Judy made her first time memorable. While in Cozumel the group had the opportunity to board two America's Cup retired racing sailboats and participate in a race with the help of an experienced crew (we did all the heavy work!!). The Canadians sailed on True North, captained by Judy who gave a rousing pep talk. Our American friends sailed on Stars & Stripes. Needless to say the Canadians won by a nose!!

MEMORY LANE: One of our most fun activities was our Scuba Experience Program, which enabled non-divers 12 years of age and older the opportunity to try SCUBA in a safe comfortable environment. We used pools in Port Elgin, Owen Sound, Hanover, Kincardine, Wingham, Goderich and Vanastra. We put on thousands of miles in the van and met thousands of amazing people over the years.

MEMORY LANE: Both Groundhog Divers Port Elgin and Kitchener participated in AquaLung Canada's Treasure Hunt Series, organizing scuba divers to raise money for charity. The events were held on Port Elgin beach. In 1995 we raised $1,020 for Participation Lodge. In 1996 we raised $1,177.85 for Ronald McDonald Children's Charity. Scuba divers can be generous!

MEMORY LANE: Judy loves Christmas and she organized floats for the Port Elgin & Southampton Santa Claus parades. First year featured Dave Wedge as the Grinch, second year was Christmas Under the Sea, and third year was a Nativity scene. A special thanks to everyone who helped -- you know who you are!!

MEMORY LANE: Who remembers our participation in both International Plowing Match's hosted by Bruce County? In 1993 we organized a wetsuit fashion show. In 2008 we joined with Fathom Five Park with a diving demonstration in a portable deep tank.

MEMORY LANE: Our mascot, Freeflow Hog, has attended many functions and dive trips over the years. In 2011 he attended a family reunion in Cozumel with his wife, mistress, children and the RCMP.

Memory Lane: Members of the Groundhog family like to dive. This is Craig Glen's 1000th dive and Deb Reid's 600th dive in 2012 at Cedarhill. At the end of 2019 they had 1600 and 1200 respectively -- that's averaging 86 dives per year and they have the log books to prove it!
