There’s something that happens around horses that is hard to explain… but very measurable.
When humans spend intentional time with horses in a calm, facilitated setting, we often see a shift in heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats. It’s one of the best physiological markers we have for nervous system regulation. Higher, more coherent HRV patterns are associated with emotional stability, resilience, and a well-regulated autonomic nervous system.
Research from the HeartMath Institute has explored what they call “heart coherence.” In simple terms, when we feel appreciation, calm, or connection, our heart rhythm patterns become smoother and more synchronized. This coherent pattern positively influences the brain, hormonal system, and stress response.
