Following extensive discussions, a decision has been reached concerning the Race to the Sea Annual Lighthouse Relay for 2023 and beyond.

Originally established in 2003, the Race to the Sea was designed to integrate fitness and the tourism sector in a fun and interactive way for communities on the Southwest Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, beginning in Cape Anguille and ending in Rose Blanche. The route consisted of 11 individual legs, encompassing approximately 120 kilometers. At its peak, the race had grown to as many as 165 athletes participating in this scenic run.

Throughout the years, many important community partners have played a significant role in coordinating this initiative. We have collaborated with local stakeholders to discuss the future of the race, however there are staffing and resource barriers to it proceeding in its current form. At this time, the Race to the Sea has been discontinued as of June 2023. Should any of the past race participants, volunteers, or stakeholders wish to discuss ways in which the Race to the Sea can transition to a runner- or community-led event, we would be happy to take part in these discussions and explore ways in which we can provide support.

We extend our sincerest thanks to all the runners, volunteers, sponsors, and communities for their support, dedication, and many contributions to the success of the Race to the Sea over the years.

As always, we invite your feedback and ideas, and encourage discussion. If you have any questions or would like to further discuss transitioning ownership of this event, please reach out to [email protected].

Announcement: Race to the Sea 2022

To start, we extend a big THANK YOU to every runner, volunteer, sponsor, and supportive friend and family member who has contributed to making the annual Race to the Sea an unforgettable experience. Without your support and dedication, the 17 years of the Race to the Sea would never have been possible!

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that the 2022 Race to the Sea will not be going ahead. Our top priority is the safety and enjoyment of our runners. Due to logistical challenges beyond our control, we are not able to provide the race experience that our runners have come to expect from the Race to the Sea. We have met with several stakeholders in the region to discuss a future vision for the Race to the Sea to make it a safe and sustainable event for the future.

We will keep you informed of further developments via our page. As always, we invite your feedback and ideas on the future of the Race to the Sea and we will post opportunities for you to engage in discussions and share your experiences.

If you have any questions, please reach out to [email protected].

Keep on running!

Historically speaking, this would be the most exciting week/weekend of the year! However, due to Covid, our event is virtual this year and there is still time to register! We partnered with Route541 to create two options! We will be following your progress online and virtually cheering you!

A big congratulations to Shirley Carter and Gail Simms who have completed the individual event at this time.

What is a virtual event?

A virtual event is one in which you move (walk or run) along a route on a virtual map. For the Virtual Race to the Sea, participants will be covering the distance of the race route on a map by running and/or walking; the distance that participants will cover will be in their own communities but will be aligned with the virtual map. The goal is to help the participant feel as if they are running/walking the actual event. As participants complete a distance, they can upload their completed walks/runs to the Route541.com website or can sync with their Strava account. Once the distance traveled is loaded, their progress will be showcased on the map. All participants will have a labelled marker on the map to identity their place along the route.

For more information on the event, please reach out to https://www.route541.com/Home/ContactUs and they will get back to you shortly.

You’ve asked and inquired, and now we want to share some exciting news!! Your Race to the Sea Committee met this week and are working hard to put together a virtual event for you this year. We hope to be back next year in our full in-person event, but rather than skip a second year we’re trying something new for the interim, until it is safe to come together in person. So stay tuned! Details will be available once they are finalized. We hope that you are as excited as we are and look forward to joining us on our virtual race this year!

Please pass along this message to your teammates, friends, running buddies that you feel may be interested in this event.
