Official site of the Cayman Islands based Cayman Breakaway Ice Hockey Team and chronicle of the team's quest for hockey glory at the annual World Pond Hockey Championships in Plaster Rock, Canada The Cayman Islands, known for warm tropical breezes, pristine white beaches and outstanding dive spots, are usually not associated with the sport of ice hockey. This held true until four residents of Gran
d Cayman decided to enter the World Pond Hockey Championship in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick (Canada) for the first time in 2005. Traditionally the event hosts teams from Canada and the USA, but 2005 marked the first time the tournament featured a team from the Cayman Islands. The name of the team, the ‘Cayman Breakaway Hockey Club’, was used to evoke images of the most exciting move in hockey and a captivating Cayman Islands warm-weather holiday. The Breakaway club is happy to display its logo alongside the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, who has continued its support for the team whose members include Norm Klein, Bill Messer, Darren Lawrence, Tim Derksen and our newest addition, rookie Patrick Agemian. While the National Hockey League (NHL) may attract a great deal of fame, the World Pond Hockey Championship presents fans of the game with a much loved and traditional view of the true nature and roots of the game – playing a game of “shinny” on a frozen outdoor pond!
