Yesterday was our last day of summer camp here on the farm.

One of the things that marks the end of our summer is the final performance created by our Drama/Farm campers in collaboration with our absolutely awesome staff. This sessionā€™s play took place in outer space, and stars became an important decorative element.

About an hour before our audience was about to arrive, I remembered this little star pin.

It had been tucked away in an old box of collectables from my childhood. My own camp counsellor gave it to me in 1993. I had completely forgotten about it until yesterdayā€”over 30 years later, when I suddenly realized that this tiny star had become an emblem of sorts for me.

A reminder that the small moments of summer camp can mean so much.

Yes, children learn skills at camp. They are exposed to new ideas, new activities, new challenges and new ways of seeing the world.

But in the end, I think the bigger questions are:

Did they leave feeling better about themselves?
Did they have positive experiences with caring adults?
Did they feel like they belonged?
Did they feel that they were part of something special?

A week or two of summer camp can start the trajectory toward a richer life.

Positive energy.
An understanding of community and collaboration.
The confidence to try something new.
The experience of being seen and valued.
And, hopefully, a little more kindness that carries forward long after camp is over.

That little star reminded me yesterday that these experiences can stay with us for a very, very long time.

I know that I do what I do today, in large part, because of how summer camp made me feel when I was a child.

Thirty-three years ago, a camp counsellor gave me a tiny star.

Yesterday, I wore it while watching a new generation of campers take the stage.

And suddenly, the circle felt complete. āļø

Lovely Camp moments in July

07/17/2026

Session One is in the books, and what a way to begin Summer Camp 2026. šŸŒæ

Some weeks seem to hold an entire seasonā€™s worth of memories. This was one of them.

We welcomed two sets of twin baby goats into the world, explored the creatures living in the creek, built our own fish smoker before learning how to smoke fish over the fire, picked fresh currants and turned them into homemade jam (with plenty of taste-testing along the way!).

There was child-led yoga beneath the trees, dramatic play and theatre games, crafts, learning to safely use real tools, practicing fire-starting skills, and countless moments of curiosity, laughter, and friendship.

Even with periods of air quality advisories, we adapted, found balance, and made the most of every opportunity to connect with the land, with one another, and with the simple joys of summer.

These are the moments that donā€™t fit neatly into a scheduleā€”the unexpected discoveries, the new skills, the confidence that grows quietly, and the friendships that often last long after camp ends.

Hereā€™s to muddy boots, smoky campfires, baby goats, berry-stained fingers, and a summer thatā€™s only just getting started.

Welcome to Summer Camp 2026. šŸ’ššŸŒ²šŸšŸ”„šŸ“

Today weā€™re celebrating 100 years of David Attenborough šŸŒæ

For generations, he has helped children and adults alike fall in love with the natural world, encouraging curiosity, wonder and care for the planet we all share.

This quote feels especially important in childhood. The more time children spend outdoors noticing insects, planting seeds, playing in natural environments and caring for living things, the more connected they become to nature and to the world around them šŸŒ³

Happy 100th birthday, David Attenborough.

What makes summer camp at That Blue Barn different?

It starts with the people. Our team is made up of adultsā€”Ontario Certified Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, and experienced Forest and Nature School Practitionersā€”who know how to create meaningful experiences and make things genuinely fun. Thereā€™s intention behind what we do, but it never feels forced.

Then thereā€™s the setting. Camp takes place on a hobby farm where children can move between forest trails, open fields, playground spaces, and time with animals. Itā€™s a place that invites curiosity, independence, and a bit of adventureā€”while still offering air-conditioned indoor spaces when the summer heat hits.

Itā€™s a balance thatā€™s hard to find: structured but flexible, creative but grounded, and always rooted in real connectionā€”to the land, to each other, and to the experience itself.

We still have a few spots left in our one-week camps.

Take a look at thatbluebarn.com for details.
