S.J.C.H.S. Spartan Football LCIAA Champions- 2011 (Sr.), 2012 (Sr.&Jr.). Bigger. Faster. Stronger. Better. In 2007, Spartan football was born.

The program experienced its first win on October 28th, 2007, when the Junior team (Grades 9 and 10) defeated Smiths Falls DCI 7-6. 2008 saw the Spartans achieve their first play-off birth, where the Juniors lost to the eventual champion Renfrew Raiders. In 2011, the Senior team (Grades 11,12, and Victory lap players) set the standard of winning with an undefeated (7-0-1) LCIAA Championship, and the winning tradition has continued ever since.

On Monday the red hot Spartans piled on the bus and with their sights set on dominant Almonte squad for the second time this season. In typical fashion for a playoff game at Beckwith the weather was less than ideal with raging winds and downpours.
The Bolts adjusted well to the weather establishing a strong and consistent running game where as the Spartans offence sputtered. The Spartans gave it their all but unfortunately came up short. The Bolts took the game with a score of 27-2 and will now advance to the LR finals while the Spartans season is done.
To all the players and the Coaches thank you for another great and successful season. Next year we hope to come back even stronger, the prep for next season begins now.
For the graduating players and your families, thank you for everything you have done for the program. Hopefully we’ll see out supporting the Spartans for years to come!

Final score: 27-2 Almonte
Record: 3-3 regular season, 0-1 Playoffs
Next game: September 2018

Bring on the Playoffs!
Tuesday afternoon the Spartans hosted the Fellowes Falcons in a win or go home matchup. High stake games are not new to the Spartans as last week they proved against PDCI that they thrive under pressure. This week was no different for the Varsity Spartans.
The St John’s offence has gotten hot and it couldn’t have come at a better time in the year. Jaimie Lee and Dustin Kerr Wiseman both scored TD’s leading the way to a 42 point outburst by the Spartans.
Defensively the Spartans have been stellar of late as well. Fellowes managed just 7 points a week after the Spartans shut out PDCI.

The Spartans hope to carry their hot streak into the playoffs. Finishing 4th in the LRFL the Spartans will move onto the LRFL semi Finals. The the Semi’s they will draw Almonte who finished the regular season in first.

Final: 42-7 St Johns
Record: 3-3
Next Game: Playoff game on Monday October 30, 1 PM vs Almonte

10/21/2017

This past Thursday the Spartans took on their cross town rivals, PDCI. Coming off of their Thanksgiving bye week there was more than just town bragging rights on the line as the Spartans found themselves in a must win situation coming into the tilt chasing PDCI in the Lanark Renfrew standings.
Alex Purdy lead the offence scoring two touchdowns in the game. Will Froggat and Braeden Kehoe added another score each. Kehoe wasn’t only making plays on offence as he also recorded an interception on the day. Jeret Jordan and Nolan Saunders also had big days offensively.
Not to be outdone by the offence that put up 33 points, the defence came ready to play and pitched a shut out. Malcom Ford, Jamie Lee, Keegan O'Connell and Dan Mercier made big plays all day for the Spartan D.
Next Tuesday the Spartans look to finish the regular season with a victory and secure a spot in the playoffs when Fellowes HS travels to St. John’s for a 1 PM kickoff.
Here’s a look at the Senior LRFL standings as they now sit:

Almonte 5-0
Arnprior 4-1
Deep River 3-2
Perth 3-3
St. John 2-3
Fellowes 1-4
Smiths Falls 0-5

Final: 33-0 St. John’s over PDCI
Record: 2-3
Next Game: Tuesday, October 24 at 1PM Fellowes HS (1-4) @ St. John’s (2-3)

10/14/2017

Today the Spartans took a long bus ride to Deep River to play the Mackenzie Mustangs. The bus ride unfortunately seemed to have taken a toll on the Spartans who seemed to be off their game today. The defence despite a strong effort couldn’t contain the Mustangs offence and the Spartan offence had their fair share of struggles as well.
This loss now puts the Varsity Spartans in a must win situation next week as they travel to take part in the 2017 instalment of the battle Perth.
Final: 22-0 Mackenzie
Next Game: PDCI Thursday, October 19

09/29/2017

This wet and cold afternoon the Spartans traveled to Almonte to play the Bolts. In what is always an exciting match up between these two schools, today was no different.
Down 10-0 at the half Brady Dillon who was electric all game showed off his athleticism scoring a touchdown off of an interception. As per usual Jeret Jordan took command under center and produced another strong performance highlighted by a touchdown pass to Nolan Saunders. Many of the linemen played both ways for Spartans and showed no sign of fatigue. Down 21-14 late in the game veteran Jamie Lee forced a fumble to give the Spartans one last shot. The offense marched the the Almonte 15 yard line but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

Final - Almonte: 21, St. Johns: 14
Record 1-2

The Spartans look to rest up over Thanksgiving as they have a bye until Friday October 13th when they travel to Deep River to play the Mackenzie Mustangs and look to return to a .500 record.

09/25/2017

Last Friday the Spartans traveled to Smiths Falls to play the RedHawks. On a beautiful sunny day the Spartans showed up seeking revenge from a tough week 1 loss. Veteran QB Jeret Jordan had a career day as he picked apart the RedHawk secondary throwing for 4 TD’s. Will Froggat was on the receiving end of 2 of those majors and Brady Dillon as well as Braden Kehoe caught one a piece. Nolan Saunders rushed for a touchdown and shortly after a gritty defensive stand on the one yard line Alex Purdy scored from 90 yards out in a Marshawn Lynch like effort, dragging defenders into the end zone. Dan Mercier and Brady Dillon played lights out both sides of the ball on Friday. On top of that the Defence and Special teams were also dominant on the day as the Spartans pitched the shutout. As the final whistle blew, the Varsity Spartans were victorious in a convincing fashion, winning 53-0.
This Friday the Spartans travel with their 1-1 record to Almonte to take on the Bolts.

09/20/2017

Last Friday the Varsity S.J.C.H.S. football team kicked off the 2017 season at home hosting Arnprior. This years Spartan Varsity team consists of players from grades 9-12, a different model from previous years with the Jr. and Sr. teams.
On offence Jeret Jordan connected with Braden Kehoe for a major and Alex Purdy rushed for the Spartans other touchdown on the day. Defensively Brandon Mitchell had himself a stellar day topped off by intercepting an Arnprior pass. Jamie Lee and Keegan O'Connel played a strong game on both sides of the ball. Despite a hard fought game from the Spartans, Arnprior showed why they are a perennial power in the county winning 24-12.
Catch the Spartans back in action this Friday as they travel to SFDCI to take on the RedHawks Varsity team at 1PM

CIS Spartans: 7 Former Spartan football players have joined the University ranks

Graduating Class of 2011:

The 2011 season marked the first time a Spartan football player had the opportunity to have worn the green and white jersey and helmet from grade 9 to 12. This experience, that all current Spartan students now have, played an instrumental role in getting the first two Spartans in school history to sign to play football at University.

#28 Scott Keeley
Scott had a formidable leg and is still considered one of the best kickers to come from Lanark County. Kickers are not usually identified as a potential game changer until you play with or against a dominant one. Keeley was known for his ability to hit 50 yard field goals and his monster punts. While also playing linebacker, Scott signed in his grade 12 year to play at Queen's University as a kicker. Scott continued his studies after his football career ended and recently received his second degree from Queen's.

# 48 Kurtis Pankow
Kurtis was a gritty defensive linemen who quickly gained a reputation as someone to avoid on the field. His brute strength, football IQ and aggressive nature on the field lead him to wreak havoc. His success on the field lead to him signing with St. Francis Xavier in Antigonish, Nova Scotia during his grade 12 year. Kurtis graduated from St. FX and is now doing his Masters in Sports Psychology at the University of Alberta where he is also coaching with the U of A Golden Bears Football program.

Graduating Class 2012:

#67 Kirk Jordan
Kirkland was part of the historic 2012 Senior Spartan football team that beat Almonte in the finals to claim the Spartans first league championship. The 6'4" offensive lineman used his size to his advantage to push around his opponents. In grade 12 Kirkland became the Spartans' biggest export when he joined his former teammate Kurtis Pankow and signed with St. Francis Xavier. Kirkland graduated from St. FX in 2016.

Graduating Class 2014

#3 Patrick Pankow
While smaller than his older brother Kurtis, Patrick was no less effective on the field. In 2013, Pankow played halfback with a dominant defense that brought home the second consecutive Senior league championship for St. John's. After that he transitioned to the safety position where he came into his own as a player and leader. Patrick stayed for 12X and, following his fifth season with the Spartans, he signed with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Pankow is currently playing for the Blues and is in his second year of study.

#52 Eric Martin
The Waterloo Warrior linemen turned heads in his Spartan days with his athleticism. Eric was a technically sound O linemen whose athleticism allowed him to play other positions such as defensive end and running back/ fullback throughout his Spartan career. Eric, along with Patrick, was part of the 2013 Senior Spartan championship team and stayed for grade 12X. It was following his "super" senior season when he signed with the University of Waterloo Warriors. Now in his second year, Eric plays center for the Warriors.

Graduating Class 2015

#27 Connor Sergeant
Connor possessed noteworthy speed and aggression which he used to run all over the league. While playing mostly running back Connor, especially in his last year, was used in many positions. While being smaller in stature, he did not let this stop him from being the most physical running back around the county. Following in the foot steps of Patrick Pankow and Eric Martin, Connor returned last year for 12X before making his decision about where to attend University. He decided that he wanted to accompany Eric to Waterloo and signed with them last spring. Connor is now a running back and return specialist at Waterloo while in his first year.

Graduating Class 2016

#53 Andrew Holmes
Holmes is the most recent Spartan to sign with a U Sport team. Andrew was exactly what you'd look for in a linebacker. His strength and ferocity led to numerous tackles that left even the spectators sore. While recently finishing his fifth and final season with the Spartans, he rarely came off the field. Not only was he linebacker, he became a bruising running back and a dazzling returner. Just a short time ago, Andrew signed with the Acadia Axemen of the AUS and will join them in Wolfville, Nova Scotia next fall.

In Fridays game the Juniors wrapped up their season playing in the snow. Almonte defending league champions came out with a 27-0 victory. In a season with few players the Juniors had an outstanding season. Showing character and heart every single snap of the season. Many people would crumble with the adversity you faced daily yet you fought until the end, take pride in that!

In the Lanark Renfrew Championship that finished just moments ago the Seniors battled incredibly hard. Both teams fought incredibly hard and but the Spartans seemed to have the answers for the Thunderbolts this time around. Almonte who had been seemingly untouchable all season were almost outmatched for the first time this year. With two minutes left the Thunderbolts were trailing but found another gear and the prevailed 22-19 for the Lanark Renfrew League Championship. Congratulations to both teams on great seasons, and good luck to the Bolts as they move forward.

With that the 2016 Spartan football season is officially over. In 2 months these players gave their heart and soul to their respective teams. They have grown over the course of the season as football players but more importantly as people. For those returning for the 2017 season, best of luck with the rest of your year can't wait to see you back on the field (remember the weight room is your friend)!

For the graduating players, hopefully you've enjoyed every your career. St Johns Football thanks you for your hours of dedication and relentless effort. Football can be a cruel game, as you've learned today and sometimes the Cinderella ending isn't quite what plays out on the field. That being said the Spartan Football alumni welcomes you to the ranks.
Remember the teammates, remember the coaches, remember the life lessons learned and those great moments you've shared with one another. Hopefully there is more football in your future, if not hopefully Spartan football provided you with a great albeit short chapter in your life! Good luck to you all in the future, see you at the 2017 Turkey Bowl.

It was typical October game day weather this past Friday for both the Senior and Junior Spartans.
The cold and wet weather did not phase the Senior Spartans as they hosted Mackenzie HS in the Lanark Renfrew semifinal. The Spartans with their 6th consecutive Lanark Renfrew finals birth on the line came to play. After the final whistle was blown the Spartans lead the Deep River squad 33-0.
The Juniors trying to build on the Seniors success played the game with energy and passion as they have all season. Arnprior though, up for the task came away with a 33-7 victory.
The Juniors next game is this Thursday at 3PM vs the defending league champion Almonte Thunderbolts in Almonte.
The Seniors will play their LR championship game at Beckwith Park Saturday at 1PM. As per usual the Spartans will be playing the Almonte Thunderbolts.
Admission to the Lanark Renfrew Senior championship game will cost $5 at the gate. We hope to see many family, friends, fans and Alumni donning the Green & White while supporting the Seniors in their quest for Lanark Renfrew supremacy!

10/17/2016

This past Friday the Senior Spartans hosted the Almonte Thunderbolts in a battle for top spot in the LRFL. The Thunderbolts seemingly had an answer for everything the Seniors threw at them. At the end of the day Almonte came away with a decisive 34-0 victory and top spot in the LRFL, while St Johns finished the regular season in 2nd.
This Friday St Johns host a double header! The Junior team plays the late game (2P.M.) against Arnprior. The Senior team kicks off their road to the LRFL championship at 12 P.M. when they host Deep River in the semi-final game

Alumni, family and football fanatics alike all came out to PDCI yesterday to catch some great Turkey Bowl action.
The Senior team came out to an almost disastrously slow start going down 14-0 quickly to a gritty PDCI team. Despite heavy rain and strong wind, the Spartans started to a comeback lead by 6'3" Keegan O'Connel who had a great day on both O and D line. Late in the game, tied 14-14, QB Jeret Jordan conducted an impressive 2 minute drill getting the Spartans in scoring range. After a costly penalty and a bobbled snap on a field goal attempt the Spartans came away with no points. With the game on the line the dominant Spartan defence prevented PDCI from getting a first down with under a minute remaining in the game. The Offence not discouraged from the ending of the last drive conducted an impressive possession which was capped off by a 1 yd TD plunge from fullback Dawson Rockburne. In desperation mode PDCI got one last crack to tie the game but their fate was sealed when Brady Dillon caught the Spartans 2nd interception of the game (first was caught by safety Alex Strong), with time expiring. The return of 5th year senior Noah Noonan to the line up was a big aid in the victory.
The Junior Spartans came into their cross town rivals turf short on bodies. With only 16 players the Juniors fought hard, without many opportunities to come off the field to rest. The junior Blue Devils came out demanding a different fate then their elders. They started out very strong and proved they are a team to be reckoned with. Despite losing 41-14 the Junior Spartans showed many bright spots throughout the game and played hard from the first whistle to the last.
Next week come out to catch what will be a great game of football and support your Spartans! St Johns hosts the Clash of the Lanark Renfrew Titans when the undefeated Senior Spartans take on the also undefeated Almonte Thunderbolts at 1PM.
See you there,
Go Spartans Go!
