Welcome Back to Team AFIW Renshi Niki Greenstreet!

Hey, you can call me Niki.
I started training in Karate-Do at the age of 6, Shodan at age 12 and I have been teaching since the age of 16. Unfortunately, the big 5-0 is only a couple of years away. You can do the math... It requires more than all my fingers and toes – so I’ll tap out here!

I’ve spent my whole life in the martial arts and would label myself a “Staunch Traditional Non-Conformist.” I struggle daily with my disdain regarding the lack of objective standards, the inflated egos and titles, meaningless ranks, patriarchal institutions, and the senseless bureaucracy I’ve seen over the many years. This starkly contrasts with my love for the movement, order, discipline, and structure of Karate. I feel that these elements are hugely beneficial to students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

If you care to, then join me on an interactive journey into exploring discipline in a society that continually rejects the respecting of rules and structure.
Oh, and my day job is in the criminal justice system – that may or may not contribute to my derision of society's ability to follow regulations. I’ll let you decide!😉

CLASS:
The Militaristic Nature of Karate: dress codes and discipline in the modern dojo.

Welcome to the Team Shihan Hélène Bienvenue! Shihan Hélène has practiced martial arts since she was 11 years old. She has a martial arts school in St-Basile-le-Grand, Quebec, Canada, where she teaches Ryukyu Kempo Karate, Small Circle Jiu-jitsu, and Okinawa Kobudo (OKDR).

During her journey through martial arts, she practiced Yoseikan-style karate (5th dan), Ryukyu Kempo with Kyusho-jitsu (DKI and KJK 3rd dan), Small Circle Jiu-jitsu (2nd dan), and Okinawa Kobudo (1st dan). She also went to Japan to receive her 6th dan from the Dai Nippon Butokukai (DNBK).

She loves to learn, teach, and share with other martial artists. She travels a lot to continue her learning with her masters, who are in the USA and Ontario.

She will teach Kyusho-jitsu (pressure point attacks) and Tuite-jitsu (joint attacks) within techniques, as well as ways we can cheat to bring the advantage to our side, even if we are less strong or shorter than others.

Welcome to the Team Sensei's Tia and Tiffanie Bankosky

Sensei Tia trains in Goju Ryu Meitoku-ha Karate-do under the instruction of Hanshi Ken Tallack. She is one of the co-instructors of the Queen’s University Karate Club under the supervision of Renshi Sachil Singh. Tia earned the rank of Sandan (third degree black
belt) while in Japan in 2023. She has extended her love of martial arts into her studies as she is a doctoral student at York University researching inclusive pedagogies for martial arts education. Tia loves discussing and learning about the historical and sociocultural factors of martial arts development and practice. She hopes to have
interesting and insightful conversations while camping with everyone this summer!

Sensei Tiffanie celebrates her 20th anniversary of training this year in Goju Ryu Meitoku-ha Karate-do under the instruction of Hanshi Ken Tallack. She is one of the co-instructors of the Queen’s University Karate Club and has earned the rank of Sandan (third degree black belt) under the supervision of Renshi Sachil Singh. Outside of martial arts, she is an Engineering Program Manager at Lumentum, combining her passions for physics and project management. Tiffanie enjoys discussing the physics of karate and is looking forward to continuing to develop her theoretical and practical knowledge of martial arts.

In the 1st picture you can see Tiffanie sharing this knowledge with students as she draws a sinusoidal function to explain the tightening and loosening within Sanchin and Tensho kata.

In the 2nd picture Tia and Tiffanie are celebrating their birthday at the dojo – what better
way to mark the occasion than 6-hours of karate training?!
The class they will be teaching will cover how to be a good partner / partner etiquette.

We are so pleased to have this subject matter focused on at our seminar. Training partnerships are yin yang relationships geared towards mutual growth. Iron sharpens Iron.

De-escalation or Defence?

Welcome to Team AFIW Sensei Carlotta Riches of Shizoku Jiu Jitsu! Carlotta Sensei holds the rank of Nidan in traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu and brings over 25 years of training experience, with only a brief break for health reasons.

With a professional background as both a nurse and a social worker, Sensei Carlotta recognized an important gap in traditional training—specifically, understanding when to apply de-escalation techniques versus when physical defense is necessary. In response, she developed a specialized program within her dojo that thoughtfully bridges this gap, combining practical self-defense with real-world awareness and decision-making. This will be the focus of her class.
